When I first heard about this Julia Roberts "comedy", I thought the title referred to her best GIRL friend, and Julia was stepping in to stop her from marrying "Mr. Wrong". IMO, that would have been a great movie about sisterly bonding.
Then, when I watched it (on TV), I saw that the "best friend" was a man whom Julia suddenly wanted for herself after learning he was to marry Cameron Diaz.
I think that Julia was a three-point bitch in this film! I'm glad she received her comeuppance from Cameron in the ladies' room at the ball park--even with all those other women listening and butting in.
I realize this is a forum for "Classic Films", and this turkey is anything but "classic"! It's badly written and directed, and the acting is sub-par.

BUT I don't know how to navigate to any other board where bitching about this movie would be more appropriate and so here I am even tho' I know this is an OT thread (AGAIN!) As usual, I could not resist telling the ending of the movie since I had seen it and don't give a rodent's butt about spoiling movies for anyone else !

Hmm, 1997 Julia Roberts versus 1997 Cameron Diaz? Hadn't seen the movie but I know my pick already.

IT is a very tiresome film with an unappealing plot. the plot you suggest sounds so much better - that was a film I might have enjoyed watching.

Hmm, 1997 Julia Roberts versus 1997 Cameron Diaz? Hadn't seen the movie but I know my pick already. Both actresses are now considered has-beens. But then, the public is mighty fickle. Back in the days of the studio system, actors were contracted for a certain number of movies per year. This kept them always before the public, and as such, their stardom endured. Nowadays, the only way some "stars" (especially female ones) are noticed is either in ads (such as Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston) or in articles in the supermarket tabloids--which are full of lies.

snsurone said "...now considered has-beens." Busy "Has-Been" Julia's FilmographyStill working, raising a family, still counting her $$$$$$$$$$$$ made years ago.
"When her brother, Eric Roberts, achieved some success in Hollywood, Julia decided to try acting. Her first break came in 1988 when she appeared in two youth-oriented movies Mystic Pizza (1988) and Satisfaction (1988). The movies introduced her to a new audience who instantly fell in love with this pretty woman. Julia's biggest success was in the signature movie Pretty Woman (1990), for which Julia got an Oscar nomination, and also won the People's Choice award for Favorite Actress. Even though Julia would spend the next few years either starring in serious movies, or playing fantasy roles like Tinkerbell, the movie audiences would always love Julia best in romantic comedies. With My Best Friend's Wedding (1997) Julia gave the genre fresh life that had been lacking in Hollywood for some time."

Odd. IT is a sort of romantic comedy I suppose, but Julia Roberts hardly comes well out of it, since she is doing her best to break up the romance for purely selfish reasons. She comes off better in Notting Hill.

She comes off better in Notting Hill. Last time I saw Julia Roberts on screen it was on a TV commercial for some brand of perfume. Same with Jennifer Aniston in print ads for Maybelline. That tells me that both actresses have passed their peaks and have been reduced to earning their livings in crummy ads. I still think MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING is a lousy movie that lowered Roberts' star rating sharply. Maybe she'll make a "comeback" some day, but with today's revolving door of "stars", I rather doubt that.

I liked it, it really played well on the idea which we never seemingly are able to remove ourselves from the past.

Again - it's just POSSIBLE they are living their lives, taking care of their families, turning down offered roles because they can afford to ! RE: Failure Jennifer: Second highest paid actress of 2017 with $25.5 million.

I liked it too. Julia must have gotten a kick out of being the evil bad less than perfect girl for a change from her goody-goody image. Less than imaginative fans might dislike her for this very reason ! It was just a fun "popcorn" movie with some laughs and a way to pass a pleasant afternoon.

One of those modern comedies, I didn't care much for it, passable slow day entertainment.

snsurone said I still think MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING is a ... movie that lowered Roberts' star rating sharply.
and yet MBFW was made in 1997 BEFORE Notting Hill, Oceans 11 and 12, Runaway Bride and many other HIT movies as shown by her IMDB Filmography hereNot to mention her ACADEMY AWARD WINNING PERFORMANCE IN Erin Brocovich 2000and a Nomination for her performance in August:Asage County 2013other awards and nominations
imo, rantings and opinions are all well and good but they really need to be based on at least a minimum of reality or risk being "challenged".

BTW, louise--PLEASE to not quote BATouttaheck's messages. I have that troll blocked, to my great relief, and I'd really appreciate not seeing any of his crap! suggested edit to this announcement in this OT thread:I really have no idea what a troll actually is but I finally listened when told how to use the ignore feature and it's such fun to point out how I use it.
That said, let me explain : I personally feel that Bat is a troll because
I really am offended by the suggestion that I read the links that Bat provides to answer my questions rather than remaining in my ignorant state.
I am bothered by Bat having asked me ages ago not to tell plot twists and film endings.
I feel attacked when Bat objects to my negativity in birthday tributes and my bashing of the dead at every opportunity but especially in death announcements. I should be free to say that someone deserved to die of Parkinson's and it's my right to post that Stephen Hawking was a British COSMETOLOGIST who did hair and makeup. I should also be free to post death hoaxes because I don't want to bother confirming news that may be faux.
I am infuriated by the fact that Bat does not swear back, likes chimps and hyenas, Calvin and Hobbes and I Love Lucy, has said that they prefer that politics be posted on the politics board and seems to not be bothered by being compared to a mule.
Bat's saying that the private lives of famous people are not really anyone's business and are especially not material for the Classics Film Board was the final straw and so ...the dreaded snu-ignore.
Thanks for letting me vent ...not that anyone can ever stop me.
Edit to the edit: This is a long overdue "get it off the chest". One gets rather tired of being labelled a troll BY a troll - however accidental some feel that she is - YES, I know this is a pointless post in a pointless thread and I KNOW that those who "know me" know that I am not the one who is the troll in this situation. so... there we are !
Have a nice day !

The movie's a bit of fluff and not really my kind of film, but nevertheless, I found it entertaining when I saw it many years ago, my wife having dragged me to the cinema. Roberts' character's attempts to break up her "best friend" (Dermot Mulroney) and his fiancee (Cameron Diaz) are funny rather than evil and sinister because they all backfire on her. Also, she's essentially a good person who finally accepts that she has lost, and she wishes them well, and bids them a gracious good-bye. I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Rupert Everett, who played Roberts' friend and editor. Everett plays a funny, likeable, openly gay man, and he steals every scene that he's in. So there's something to be said for more recent films - though this has to be more than 20 years old - characters such as the one Everett plays could not have been included in films of the classic movie era.

mcavanaughI find that sometimes a simple piece of fluff hits the spot. Seeing usually goody-goody-smiley Julia as the adversary was a nice change of pace. Agree that Rupert Everett was terrific ! All in all, an enjoyable little film (imo)

Maybe she was a good person deep down, but you'd never guess it from this movie. I'm sorry that I neglected to mention Rupert Everett. I agree that he stole the movie. In a way, this movie reminds me a little of GWTW, where Scarlett tried every means in her power to break up Ashley and Melanie. It wasn't until Melanie died that Scarlett realized what a selfish fool she had been. To tell the truth, I would have liked Roberts' character to end up as Scarlett did: alone and lonely, and without Tara to give her confidence.

Read today's (5/7/18) Dear Abby column. The first letter is almost exactly like the plot of this movie.
