The assassination of President Kennedy. I was in class in the 5th grade when my teacher stopped a movie we were watching and told us, crying, what had happened.
My parents didn't let me watch much of the coverage on TV, but it was a profoundly sobering event at the time. Years later, I re-watched news footage.
That, then Challenger, then of course 9/11.

The announcement of the end of the Korean war, in July of '53 (I had to look that up.)
Prior to that, I don't recall news stories about the war, itself. I only recall knowing that there was a "war" going on ... and, that that wasn't good. The announcement was good!

The Battle of Mogadishu in 1993, aka Black Hawk Down. I was four years old and heard it over the radio. Because of that, Somalia was one of the first countries I knew about as a little kid.

President Kekkonen's funeral in 1986. I was 6. I still remember the funeral cortege and the somber mood.

I was at a friend's house when the news broke in on the TV about Reagan getting shot. This was right around the time I was obsessed with the JFK assassination and had memorized all the presidents. I was ten.

The murder of Stephen Lawrence. I would have been 7 at the time.

The fall of the Berlin wall, live on television.
I was barely 6 then.

Kennedy being elected. My folks were staunch Republicans and Kennedy winning was devastating to them...and me because I didn't know any better. NOT that I am necessarily liberal, but that the idea that him winning over Nixon was so end-of-the-world traumatic seems comical in hind sight.

The Vietnam War. I can't remember anything specific about it other than my parents talking about adopting a Vietnamese child (not sure if they meant it - probably not) and me thinking it would be the worst idea ever, as we were already three children in the family.

The first story I remembet was when my Dad was reading the newspaper with great concern. I asked him, “What does that say?” It was a big headline. It was either “Army Beats Navy” or “Navy Beats Army.” I asked him, “Don’t you think it would be better if our Army and our Navy fought wars on the same side?” I think I was 5.
