Like, walked into the wrong theater, rented a movie with a similar title (bonjour, Asylum) etc.
1. The George C. Scott movie They Might Be Giants was being shown on tv, so I set the VCR. That evening's televised snooker ran over, cutting off the last ten minutes of the movie. A few years go by. It's on again, I set the VCR again, but set it for five minutes too short. Missed the ending again. I think it was another fifteen years before I finally saw the ending (and it wasn't exactly worth the wait).
2. My stupidest feat was when the third Resident Evil movie came out. Got the disc from Netflix, put it on. Film starts out with a flashback of the second movie. Half an hour goes by, we're still on flashback, and I'm annoyed that this movie only has one hour of new material. Or....maybe it really is the second movie. Yep, third wasn't even released yet.
3. Spending 20 years convinced Sally Field was in Independence Day when it was Margaret Colin.
4. I wanted to see Man on a Ledge. Rented The Ledge instead.

Interesting question.
For a first date, I took a girl to see Grindhouse in 2007. End of line.
Eating a pot cookie and watching Flash Gordon (1980) in 2010. Stuff of nightmares.

I was watching "It's Pat" with my sister during a bad thunderstorm many years ago. There's a part during the film where Pat is being lowered down on a stage with Pat's pants down. Here's the moment when we're supposed to find out Pat's gender since the joke of the film is Pat being androgynous. Just as we're about to find out, the power goes out. Lol.

Watching Papillion on broadcast tv and someone rings the doorbell about 20 minutes before it is to end.
Watching Cape Fear on cable tv and someone telephones me 15 minutes before it ends.
Worst: wanting to see Vault of Horror 1973, a film I waited years to see. It comes on a Turner channel late at night so i set the VCR. Only problem is, the time was wrong so it ended 5 minutes later, and I miss it! There is a sequence with 4 guys walking like zombies in a famous photo from it so I was upset.
So they never run it again.
Eventually I am on the internet and talking about it in a movie collector group and someone offers to send me a VHS tape of it, the uncensored version. I sent him $8. He sends me nothing. Then someone else offers to send me the movie (not for $8). I finally get to watch it--the quality was like 10th generation video. I watch the film to the end, but lo and behold the famous "ghoul walk" shot is missing!!
Turns out, it is not in any version of the film, and may never have been actually filmed.

A while ago, I wanted to watch Child's Play on Demand. It was playing with this family stuck in a house and can't get out. While this was going, I was waiting for Chucky to come out. Well, turns out it wasn't even the movie. It wasn't even until I looked it up years later to find out it was a TV movie/episode of an old horror series. Can't even remember the name of this series nor can I find now it looking it up.

Just found it on YT. The series is called Hammer House of Mystery and Suspense. The episode was aired in 1984, same year as the original Elm Street film. It sure was a strange watch, not knowing what in the blue hell was going on.

Not really a bad mistake but watching Lost Highway thinking it was going to be a sort of modern film noir. Didn't really know much about Lynch when the film came out. Was really confused by the whole film and it was nothing like what I thought it would be. It had an awesome soundtrack though and the film had me very curious so I bought it on VHS when it was released. Watched it several more times and still don't really understand it. But it ended up being a good mistake (on my part) in the long run.
