Anyone else think they should do more mini-series and TV movies? I know they used to do many years ago, but in recent times they stopped. The general trend now is to extend an idea for as long as possible. But I think there are many great story ideas out there that are best told within a contained format and shouldn’t be drawn out for many seasons.

I think they should do more too. A lot of things that wouldn't be made by a regular movie studio could be done.

There have been a few TV mini-series that I've enjoyed, but the one I remember most is the 1998 two-part mini-series Merlin starring Sam Neill.
I don't think I've watched a live action interpretation of Arthur/Merlin legend that I've liked as much since.
The fact that Lena Headey's also in it is a nice bonus.

Having just watched the excellent Olive Kitteridge, I couldn't agree more. We deserve more stories like this, told in the proper amount of time it takes in which it takes to tell them.

Something like 'Under the dome' should've been a one season mini-series instead of them dragging it out. I'd definitely watch more mini-series, I miss them from my youth

No to mini-serieses. There is no need for them. They are a waste of time and space. Either do a show properly, and take your time with it, or just make it a movie.
TV movies I'd be okay with I guess, but they're kind of pointless, because they could just be released on video. There's no benefit to releasing movies on TV as far as I can tell.

Imagine Fahrenheit 451 as a mini series.

With Amazon Prime I've been catching up on a few. (BBC's "The Widow" was good. etc.)
Just watched the new "Picnic at Hanging Rock". Purists will probably be annoyed. But overall I enjoyed it. You get much more background on the characters. Nice settings and costumes.

A lot of good buildup to a rushed and mediocre finale.

Many cable networks produce original movies for their channels but mini-series are more rare these days. I think the big broadcast networks in the US as well as cable should try to bring them back. I'm sure there are a lot of books that are too long for a movie but not open ended like a series.

Well that "Waco" miniseries on Paramount (formerly Spike) didn't seem to generate much interest. i think you can still get your fill of tv movies and miniseries with the right cable/streaming service subscription.

[/quote] *spoilers* *spoilers* It's how the original Novel ended but they omitted the chapter for a long time thinking it was too out there. The original 1975 film ends even more vauge. We don't really get an explanation. Possibly they were assaulted and buried elsewhere. Etc. It's never made clear. It's also alluded to Miss Appleyard may have killed the young girl. The film is far shorter with less background on the characters.
