What do you aim to get out of watching them?
For me, it's seeing people put into situations that can't happen in real life, and seeing how they cope. And seeing the monster get slayed.

I love the atmosphere. There's nothing like watching horror in the dark.

Like PreachCaleb, I love the atmosphere. I have no interest in really being scared or depressed, which is why I stay far away from most modern horror flicks, but I love that gradual feeling of unease and the loads of eerie atmosphere… Unsurprisingly my horror preference is for the old M.R. James style ghost story and, in film terms, the few movies that capture its kind of feel.

Atmosphere is also my main reason for watching horror movies. I also find supernatural/Sci-Fi much more interesting than mundane topics like cops, criminals, agents etc.

Mainly because they're easy to follow and have multiple films to watch.

"The true horror film (I use the abominable description) has its roots in the fairy tale, and the fairy tale has its roots in the soil of humanity...For the audience, this kind of film is a release--a bizarre world outside ordinary experience where the tensions are enjoyable." Boris Karloff

I love the atmosphere. There's nothing like watching horror in the dark. Nah, it's not a cool atmosphere unless you're a little kid or a loser.

I like the fantasy and/or thriller aspects of the subject matter and the way it's typically treated.
I like "dark" subject matter and handling, too, including when there's also a comedy element (black comedy). I'm attracted to creepy things, moody, melancholy etc. "atmosphere," and so on.
I like that ideally, anything could happen in a horror film.

A number of reasons. As others have said, it's atmosphere. The thrill of being creeped out, grossed out, and scared. Constantly being on edge. Watching a well-done gory killing. And finally, thrill of watching the never-ending battle between Good and Evil.

I enjoy the macabre and grim side of storytelling. Plus I dig monsters and gore.

I enjoy the macabre and grim side of storytelling. Plus I dig monsters and gore I pretty much agree with what everyone already mentioned but ^this mostly. I'll also add that I really like the psychological type of horror. Movies that can get in people's heads and just mess with it.

I came for the blood, but stayed for the gore.

Boris Karloff This is perfect; really sums up my feelings on the genre. I think I latched onto horror at a young age as a sort of defense mechanism. If I could "survive" a scary movie, I could survive anything. Now, I just really enjoy the various depths (artistic, emotional, etc.) the genre has to offer. I am 34 and am still seeing gems from years past for the first time.

I watched a lot last year because I was just feeling irritable. Eventually one gets tired of all the jump scare crap. That could be why I had digestive issues this year. Now I think I'm feeling better. I haven't seen a horror flick since december
