He's been so lauded today that I think I'll have to start reading his stuff.

Same here, on both counts. I see on my spreadsheet that I've bought "Back to Blood" for 5$ back in January 2015 (from a bargain bin, apparently) but I haven't got around to reading it yet. Maybe I will move it to the top of the queue now that he is dead. I read "Bonfire of the Vanities" before the movie was made and I remember looking forward to watching it and then being sorely disappointed at the adaptation.

Too bad he went out on a sour note by writing a ridiculous book about scientific subjects he knew nothing about, which predictably made him look like a fool.

Read 'The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test' in the early '70s while on an extended mescaline trip, and I felt like I was on the bus with The Merry Pranksters. It was a great time in my life. Was sad when I finished the book.
Have tried to re-read it many times, but that period of my life couldn't be replicated, and I could never get back on the bus.

I remember reading his Bonfire of the Vanities to myself out loud, performing the various voices with their appropriate accents, NYC and otherwise. I'm still hoping that HBO or some other outlet will make a miniseries out of that book which does justice to it (by now it can be a great period piece about the bad old '80s). R.I.P., Mr. Wolfe.

Wolfe's Radical Chic and Mau-Mauing the Flak-Catchers (1970) might have relevance to the political correctness and militancy of today.

Bonfire of the Vanities is an amazing book, one of the best pieces of writing I've ever read.

Bonfire, Man in Full, Charlotte Simmons,The Right Stuff, Cool Aid Acid Test, Back to Blood are all great, fun reads.
I haven't read his others, not sure how many he wrote.
Underrated sense of humor.. like the tailgate party scene in Charlotte Simmons or the part in Man in Full when the guy gets up at 4AM to go horseback riding.
