Two great flicks that have not been mentioned are The Tale of Zatoichi (1962) & An Autumn Afternoon (1962).
An Autumn Afternoon is a beautiful picture by master film maker Yasujirô Ozu, who is considered a more brilliant director than Akira Kurosawa by native people of Japan. Much like his other great films, Ozu uses stationary camera in shooting An Autumn Afternoon (1962). A father (Shuhei) meets an old friend and sees how bad relationships are between his friend and his friend's daughter. While Shuhei's own relationship with his daughter is on very good terms the meeting with his friends makes him concerned about the future of his own relationships with his daughter. So the father makes it a matter of great importance to get his daughter married. The daughter doesn't want to marry. And then the story unfolds gently and slowly, like other movies of great Ozu. I strongly recommend this film.
The Tale of Zatoichi (1962) is a story of blind masseur who develops skills with swords and frequently gets caught in situations where he has to use his sword skills. Zatoichi is not averse to cheating in dice games and he uses his hearing skills to understand the sound of dices. Zato doesn't show that he cares about people but he does help the poor people when the situation demands. Zatoichi became such a loved movie that no less than 23 parts were eventually released of this movie. The actor who plays Zatoichi is especially gifted at being both serious and funny as the situation demands. A must see for all the martial arts lover. Well, a good watch for any cinema lover to be honest.
