Goodfellas is a good film. Overrated as some think of it a a great film that should have won Best Picture, etc. I have seen it twice. I had the same problem both times. Not only was Henry Hill a criminal he also turned rat. Run a search for "Henry Hill" on YouTube and there are documentaries, interviews, etc. He was a worthless bum for his entire life. Totally undeserving of respect. This unfortunate fact influences my opinion of Goodfellas. Gotti is better imo. Underrated.

I saw a documentary on Henry Hill awhile ago and ,wow, what a piece of work this loser was. If I recall correctly, witness protection was so sick of his antics that they removed him from the program. Yes, I love the movie, but it did stray from the real Henry Hill. He died a few years ago from an illness, but what is shocking to me is that the mob didn't kill him first.

I can easily separate the two even if it is based on a true story. It isn't a documentary and Hill is a douchebag in the movie too.

It is not a documentary and I am all for giving producers and directors "artistic license" to make a film about a real person or event. The fictional love story in Titanic comes to mind. I bring this up because I saw some posters claim it deserved Best Picture on another thread. The OP offered several years where the Best Picture was awarded and asked members to vote on which was the worst. My vote went to 1995 (for the Best Picture from 1994) when Forrest Gump won over The Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction. I no longer put as much value on the Oscars as I use to. Curiously I did not have this problem with Casino which I thought was a better film than Goodfellas. Plenty of unsavory characters in Casino but I think it was a great film. In terms of pure film making I think it was better than Goodfellas. My problem with Goodfellas was that Henry Hill was an utterly worthless human being. He was a liar, a criminal, a coward who ratted on his friends to save himself. Later in life he was a criminal who would not work even though Witness Protection offered him jobs. He had to be moved at taxpayer's expense because he didn't keep a low profile. When he was moved he sold drugs, engaged in criminal activity and was a drunk who drank himself to death. He was a bum. This should not influence my opinion on the quality of the film but it does. I can't get behind the fans who claim it was such a great film because the real Henry Hill was a lowlife.

Not sure how the real life person can influence the opinion of the movie when the same thing happens in the movie....

Much of the reason I love the film is becasue of how well made it is but I also love the screenplay and characters and I love these things for the reasons you don't. Imo this movie shows mobsters for the scumbags they are and gives us a glimpse into a vile lifestyle that is alien to the general veiwer, while also being extremely entertaining. I think Goodfellas is better pure filmmaking than Casino. You don't have to get behind anything but I adore the movie and it is one of the greatest filmmaking achievements of all time as far as I'm concerned. He ratted on his "friends" to save himself you say? You think you wouldn't do the same but you don't know that. Hill becomes paranoid in the last part of the film and for good reason and it shows at the end that he will live in fear for the rest of his life becasue of what he did.

I don't care how true the movie is to the real person, all i care is that the movie is a cinematic masterpiece

Not only was Henry Hill a criminal he also turned rat. I don't think the film suggested he was anything else. In fact, the main theme of the film was both an exploration and critique of the code they lived by... www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5Mfs44MhYM

This mock praise for a terrible movie makes me think many of you have relatives involved in the making of this tripe.
Fact is, it's just a dull, lifeless movie. For all the violence, it has no "bang per bang". It's plodding, and the accents are as annoying as the characters.
It's a poor movie. Plain and simple. It is what it is. It makes no sense to think it should even be considered for an award. No credibility. No inspiration. No excitement. No cool. Just a loser on all levels.
It isn't overly depressing, chiefly because it's impossible to stay awake through in one sitting, so it isn't a 1/10, but it's still a 2/10.

Even worse than Henry Hill: the real Birdman Of Alcatraz, Robert Stroud, a dangerous psychopath in real life, whitewashed by the movie, which I like.
Movies based on real life people seldom "tell the truth". The aim of most movies is to entertain, not enlighten (well, commercial mainstream movies). I mean, look at how sympathetically Jesse James and Billy the Kid have been presented in so many movies.

I understand and agree with what you're saying but Goodfellas did tell the truth about Hill; he was a rat and a thoroughly unlikable person to boot - it's all there in the film. It was a credit to Scorsese and Liotta they managed to squeeze a sympathetic and relatable performance from the character (the film wouldn't have worked otherwise,) but at no point did they portray him as a good guy.

I don't think the film makers liked or respected him either. His story was a route into examining the lives of gangsters at the lower end of the food chain and in the end they're scum (even if they don't turn informer).

Exactly. There is no issue as far as that's concerned....
