You've probably heard the terms "Fan Service" or "Pandering to fans" a lot in recent years for many franchise films whenever a new sequel, prequel, reboot, remake, etc. comes out.
It's basically adding unnecessary content to a movie purely for fans of the franchise. Some like seeing the appearance of previous actors/actresses and/or character, making references to previous films, rehashing/replaying scenes from previous films, etc. while others find it gratuitous and pandering.
Some examples:
-Jeff Goldblum's appearance as Ian Malcolm in "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom"
-References to Brody, Henry Jones Sr., the Ark, etc. in "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull"
-Rehashing/replaying scenes from "Wrath of Khan" in "Stark Trek Into Darkness"
-Replaying scenes from the first Terminator film in "Terminator: Genysis"
And there are some instances where, although an argument can be made that fan service is happening, the appearance of a previous character has a purpose to the story and isn't just appealing to fans i.e. Yoda in "The Last Jedi".
So basically where do you stand on the concept of fan service/pandering to fans when it comes to franchise films? When do you find it acceptable and when do you find it gratuitous? What are some good/bad examples of fan service/pandering to fans for you?

Its hard to seperate. I dont think those Brody/Indys father references in Crystal Skull qualify as fan service, its legimate exposition to explain what happened to them. And that replay of Terminator 1, in Genesis may appear like Fan service but it does have a meaningful purpose to the plot as they are doing time travel.
I dont really mind if its a nod or a brief cameo which is conveyed as fan service, but when its overlong and blatant in your face then its annoying.

I fucking hate it usually, but that's got more to do with the fact that it's usually done really poorly, but you can imagine Abrams or whoevers' cheeks going red with pride, thinking he's been really clever when he does it.
Some less offensive ones I don't mind at all are thinks that you'd miss if you weren't paying attention (T Rex smashing the Spino's bones in JW) but too many times I've felt talentless directors are she-horning in film-derailing fan-service to give their films bonus points.

The WORST of it is (to me at least) with the "STAR WARS" Franchise whose Fans feel that they have the right to tell DISNEY what it can and can't do with it's New "STAR WARS" Movies.

If the reaction to Last Jedi was bad, I suspect the response to the Solo movie will be even more toxic. People constantly bitch about how Disney ruined Star Wars. Yeah, because it was in fantastic shape during the prequel years. For the Solo movie, I’m apprehensive largely because Ron Howard is directing. But the recent films like Rogue One and even Last Jedi have me anticipating Episode IX next year.

Rougue One is basically just fan service loosely connected by a story. I think the cameos of those guys Luke gets into a fight with in the cantina might be the epitome of it.

Worst example I can think of is Charlton Heston's cameo in Burton's 'Planet of the Apes.'

Yeah and I Don't Care if I don't have a Say in the Matter because even common sense says that they should bring back Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi.

There are situations where someone is cast in a role that has some cinematic historical irony.. like
casting Felton Perry and Robert DoQui in Robocop since both played cops in 70s movies of some note.
Or casting Peter Fonda as the Devil in Ghost Rider since he did Easy Rider and Race With the Devil.
Or Reni Santoni and Andrew Robinson in Cobra since both were in Dirty Harry.
I don't think this was pandering to fans or done for marketing reasons, it just has an extra element to it that provides amusement/resonance.
Have to think about a true example of fan service that I like...
maybe the appearance by Hugh Jackman in X-Men First Class which I thought was the best part of the movie.

I'm usually okay with it, as long as it isn't exessive. It is excessive in Star Trek: Into Darkness to the point where it doesn't ever feel like it's own movie.
The exception is Rogue One, which is an extremely well done fan service film.

Fans always have the right to tell the filmmakers and studios what they are doing wrong. They don't have to listen though, even though a lot of the time they should.
