What's the deal with this rerelease? I know it was at Cannes, and then it was getting rereleased in "select cities" "beginning" May 18th. What cities would those be? Is it done now? I can't get a straight damn answer.
I was genuinely looking forward to seeing this on the big screen.

I don't see the point in 70mm screenings anymore. They could still present this on a big screen digitally, with the 2:20 ratio and get the same image quality\effect. Fine. Just put it in a damn Vegas theater.

Fine. Just put it in a damn Vegas theater. I just feel with the new technology today, this is what needs to be embraced. Films can still be shot on film stock, but they can still be rendered for the same presentation within the digital milieu. I projected movies for just over 20yrs, and did 35mm, some 70mm, mainly platter with some reel to reel changeovers. I saw the advent of the digital age and it forced me out, but to my mind, the results were impessive. When I saw Hateful Eight in 70mm, they had a technical issue halfway through and had to switch to digital and it didn't look as good imo. Either way, I just want to see 2001 in a theater because people say that's how it's meant to be seen.

If they can bring it back in its original form, I would pay good money to see it.

It was meant to be seen in Cinerama which is a curved screen. If they can bring it back in its original form, I would pay good money to see it. Not technically, because pure Cinerama had a much narrower aspect ratio— like Hateful Eight's Ultra Panavision filming process—than the 2:20 70mm super panavision ratio that 2001 was filmed in. However, there are plenty of cinemas around with giant screens, which accommodate towards the cinemascope 2:35 ratio and have a slight curve in them. There would have to be black bars on the left and right of the image to render 2001's correct aspect ratio. They did this in the early 00's, with a 35mm re-release of 2001. Hateful 8, was more pure Cinerama, with the bars at the top and bottom of the image. Wow, this is just too spooky. I JUST NOW GOT HOME FROM SEEING "2001: A Space Odyssey" ON THE BIG SCREEN! The Music Box theater. One of those super cool, cavernous, beautiful movie houses from the 1920s. It was pretty spectacular. And the film does need to be seen on the big screen. That's so weird in the coolest, most fantastic way possible, Toasted Cheese! I looooove it when stuff like that happens! It's the best of the best.

I checked out that theater, it looks very elegant and antiquated. The screen doesn't look that large though, although the cinema is equipped for 70mm. 70mm needs to be seen on giant screens.
I saw that it is going to be screening Argento's Phenomena. It stated though, it was the 82min version, which is the cut US one.
The screen may not be big enough to properly accommodate a 70mm film. I just can't speak of matters like that because I am not informed and I might not even know the difference. I know that YOU, Toasted Cheese, would likely know much about that as a former job of yours made you very knowledgeable on the subject! That would have been a cool job. Working up in that dark booth, watching movies continuously. Would have suited me wonderfully. Yes, they're showing "Phenomena" this weekend, which is my favorite Dario Argento movie, so I am definitely going. But, like you said, it is the 82 minute cut, the American "Creepers", and that's 28 minutes they've edited. And that's a lot! So that part's a little disappointing. I have a couple favorite scenes and I am just hoping those are intact. I'm not about to look a gift horse in the mouth!

I can't find anything with a schedule of showings anywhere. I've Googled, looked at any number of movie websites but can't find anywhere that tells what cities and when 2001 will be playing. From what I read it is going to be one of those "one night only" events instead of a week's run. Whatever it is I don't want to miss it.

By the by, the point of 70mm is so it can be seen as the first audiences saw it in 1968. It is a time travel experience to the past. That is one of the reasons I am so anxious to see it that way.
