Watched this series a few weeks back and was surprised it had zombies, who knew? Not me. I assumed it was another Hunger Games-ish type series. The horror crowd might have turned out if they knew. Granted, it was a very small part of the story, especially in the sequels, not sure if the novels got edited down or what.

You answered your question. They were aiming to ride the wave left by The Hunger Games and Twilight movies and whatever other Y/A fantasy movie was out at the time. Was it Divergent?

Well the second film is the one to introduce the zombie aspect. To answer your question, I think it has to do with pleasing the young adult/teenager crowd, as politicidal stated that they were also part of the YA movie crave like THG.

I thought the first one was well-crafted for what it was, and I enjoyed it as someone outside its intended demographic. It was kind of like a kinder, gentler Lord of the Flies mixed with Labyrinth sans David Bowie and with hideous constructs instead of Jim Henson’s muppets.
I got distracted by Littlefinger in the second one. There’s no way that dude shows up and doesn’t do some fucked up or shady shit. I’m also think it would have made more sense to me if I’d read the book, because I remember it was a bit convoluted. The tone was a lot different than the first film.
Haven’t seen the third one yet.

I heard that the script for The Scorch Trials deviated quite a bit from the book, but then got back on track for the third film. I couldn't say since I never read any of the books.
