Seriously, no one’s talking about this? I mean holy shit, this is an instant horror classic.
It’s so relentlessly dark that you think things have hit bottom and nope, there are layers of fucked-upness it hasn’t even scratched yet.
I cannot say enough good things about the production values and the cast. Terror and Erebus felt like real Royal Navy ships-of-the-line. All the details down to the ornamented deck access hatches, the elaborately carved sterns, the captains’ cabins, the galleys...it’s extraordinary. And the cast did such a good job of looking and acting like a real Discovery Service crew, from the captains, officers and mates on down to the ship’s boys.
Ciaran Hinds and Tobias Menzies are both veterans of GoT, but more importantly they played Gaius Julius Caesar and Brutus respectively in Rome, so it was fantastic to see that officer’s dinner scene where Captain Fitzjames (Menzies) talks about leading an assault on a Chinese city in the First Opium War, and “thinking of Caesar crossing the Rubicon” as he scaled the walls.
Jared Harris is an absolute beast of an actor and was spectacular as Capt. Francis Crozier. Talk about a character arc.
Likewise, Paul Ready and Nive Nielsen were fantastic as Dr. Harry Goodsir and Lady Silence. Ready stole the scenes he was in, and Nielsen spent half the time communicating with facial expressions alone.
The Terror really got me interested in the Franklin Expedition and that period of seafaring in general, and it’s fascinating stuff.

Very well done production, relentlessly grim and surprisingly gory. Jared Harris has definitely cemented his reputation as one of our greatest actors here.

I stayed with the first half. But it got too slow and methodical for my liking. It's exceptionally well made and the cast isn't bad I guess though. I saw the highlights featuring the creature on YouTube. Not quite what I expected.

I read somewhere else on these boards, that AMC are going to do a new season, using the title, The Terror, in the same vein as American Horror Story. I doubt they will be able to improve on the first season.
