I don’t really like this big old robot general guy as a villain, I much prefer a flesh and blood human being. The robot just doesn’t convince me.

Anakin doesn’t seem particularly bothered by having just killed someone.

Natalie Portman’s looking a bit like Audrey Hepburn right here, curiously enough.
And she’s gorgeous. Have I mentioned that? I don’t think I’ve mentioned that enough.

Honestly, Treasure Planet. So close, especially the designs of the aliens. Did someone here mention that McDiarmid is playing the Emperor somewhat differently here? Or was that in a different thread? He seems to be playing the role more goofily here. And Christopher Lee was McDiarmid’s apprentice? At age 80 or however old he was here? Also, one helluva weird, surreal Vertigo-esque dream sequence. And Natalie Portman’s beautiful. I think I like how they did her hair in the last movie a bit more, though.

Why would Ani be expelled? Are the Jedi some kind of celibate religious order? (I mean, I’m guessing Yoda’s a celibate, but the others…?) Speaking of religious orders, Ani’s going to confession with Yoda right now. I’m not sure Yoda’s advice, denying emotion, is particularly good, but I doubt anyone was philosophizing that much for this movie. You could do a pretty good psychoanalysis of this movie is a dichotomy between two father-figures, Obi-Wan and Palpatine, the good and the evil. I thought the Chancellor already had dictatorial power. City-Planet still looks amazing.

I absolutely love this scene between the Emperor and Ani. Love it.
Is shot and looks like a horror picture.

EDIT: Er—lots of Chewbaccas.

It’s pretty damn creepy how orgastic the Emperor is getting because Ani’s getting angry.

It’s pretty damn creepy how orgastic the Emperor is getting because Ani’s getting angry. It gives him focus. Makes him stronger.

Kill him, Sam!
Just kill him! (But that’s probably what he’d want him to do.)

Why is Anakin defending the “Jedi way” here but not when he killed Lee?
And Sam Jackson’s gone too, and the Emperor’s so creepy, so creepy. He looks and sounds like Dracula, for God’s sake.
1. Cushing 2. Yoda 3. Neeson 4. Lee 5. Jackson
Who’s next?
I’m not entirely sure I believe Anakin’s transformation to pure evil, just all of a sudden. I mean, I know it was supposed to be a gradual transformation, but it feels like that one battle did it. The imagery’s wonderful, though. Also, I think that alternate-father psychology is intended—Anakin calling the Emperor “master” directly mirrors his having called Obi-Wan “master.” The Sage-as-Father vs. the Manipulative Trickster-as-Father.

Primemovermithrax Pejorative, you mentioned Coppola above; this “order 66,” with the stormtroopers turning on the Jedi, has to have been taken from The Godfather’s baptism. Has to. Wow.

He’s not actually going to kill the kids, is he? Is he? Only then will he be strong enough in the Dark Side to save Padme...

He’s not actually going to kill the kids, is he? Is he? Only then will he be strong enough in the Dark Side to save Padme… It’s nuts. Kill all the kids to save his kid(s)? Lacking all human emotion? OK, maybe the writing doesn’t quite warrant this change in Anakin’s character, but this is an excellent movie so far.

How exactly did the Emperor choose the name “Vader,” by the way?

Does he really think Padmé’s going to want to stick with him after he brutally murders pretty much everybody? Once you start down the Dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.

OK, maybe the writing doesn’t quite warrant this change in Anakin’s character, but this is an excellent movie so far. I maintain it's not out of the blue or "in one scene" that Anakin turns -- or, rather, falls to the Dark Side. It's THE through line of his character, starting with the moment he's separated from his mother.
