It's unfortunate that his truly incredible master pieces aren't as well known as his more formula movies, but even his formula films have more to offer than most formula films.
His two greatest works are BLESS THE BEASTS AND CHILDREN and OKLAHOMA CRUDE. The first is a magical piece of complete inspiration. The second is an amazing switch and twist film from the usual Hollywood style.
I'd love to be able to pick a third, the underrated PRIDE AND THE PASSION, the best film Frank Sinatra did, and his best performance.
These three are kept on the back burner, but they're his best. I doubt if many people have even seen them, though. They don't get much play.
Some of the others are simply politically correct period pieces, those "safe" films that people were afraid not to like, but their characters weren't nearly as three dimensional as his top three films.
IT'S A MAD MAD MAD WORLD is one of those that I think had some great ideas, but for me it didn't work, because it simply tried to compress comic bits of about half of the 60 or 80 most famous comedians into a movie. Kind of a waste of talent. But it wasn't a bad film. It simply didn't get a chance to develop the inspiration that was intended.
