The character actor, known to most of us here as creepy villains in the John Carpenter films "Assault on Precinct 13" and "Escape from New York", has died at the age of 73.

I really enjoyed Frank's performances in those two films. Small roles that he made very memorable.
I'm sorry to hear he's left us.

R.I.P.
I remember the first time I saw him in Escape from New York (1981), and while Isaac Hayes surely was a total bad ass, I still think that he was completely "outdone" everytime Frank stepped up to the screen along with his chilling and unpredictable behaviour as Duke's creepy second in command, Romero. When I first saw the film I thought Romero was a far more intimdating figure than any of Duke's men, even the big man himself. The way he walked and talked was really cool and he always seemed to end up stealing the show, no matter how small roles he took on. A very gifted and memorable "chameleon" character actor indeed.
My favorite part has to be when Romero walks slowly and calm towards Hauk's (Lee Van Cleef) entire police squad all by himself like a complete boss, and lays out the rules, without any bullshit, just gets straight to the point:
I think Kurt Russell once said that this particular scene really sat the tone or atmosphere of the rest of the film, praising Doubleday's performance.
