It's hard not to spoil a story that we have known for 26 years but I will try. Let me start by saying that my hopes for the movie were not the highest in the world, but it was actually pretty good, better than expected.
The live-action feature manages to flesh out a few things from the animated version, it wants to blend the Disney cartoon and the fairy tale of old and it achieves just that with barely no effort. It is also to notice that Emma Watson gives a tremendous performance as Belle and Dan Peters tho a CGI character for almost the entire movie makes a lovable beast. Emma Watson personifies the beauty in the inside and the outside, you can really tell that she put all her effort into honoring this timeless story.
The supporting cast was terrific, the songs we know and love will draw you to tears but the real diamond in the rough here is Josh Gad as Lefou. Not only was he amazingly funny as Gaston's sidekick but he was also his own person and the character with more personal growth of the entire cast, this could very well be his movie.
However, what kills the enjoyment as I had feared was Luke Evans' performance as the antagonist Gaston, he was more of a cartoon than the actual cartoon version from start to finish, a cliche scene after scene not believable as a person, not even as a cartoon character. It was a poorly written character and a horrible performance, I was by the end either wishing I could watch the same movie with a different Gaston or that he hadn't even been there. Some tongue in cheek moments are also cringe worthy and manage to kill the make belief of the story.
Countering the good with the bad I have to say with a clear conscience that I rate this 6 out of 10. Sure, it is enjoyable to be seen once, maybe twice... but it is not at all remarkable, nor is it timeless. There is beauty in the film, just not enough to counter all the beastly choices the filmmakers made.
There is nothing that there wasn't there before.

Judging from reviews, it sounds like there's really no point in seeing it if you've seen the original. But of course, me being myself, I'm going to see it anyway. I always go to movies like this.

No there was every good reason to go see this. Yes it followed it almost exactly, but I still thought it was great seeing a live action take.

I loved it. It was beautiful, funny, and entertaining. Emma Watson was perfect as Belle and I thought the whole cast did great. I had no problems with Gaston. I think he was a god villain. I rate it 9/10.

I thought it was truly great! Disney is absolutely brilliant for remaking it's animated classics into live action classics.

Didn't like it as much as I thought I would. Didn't want to compare it to the classic, but I can't help it. I'd say 6.5/10. CGI threw me off a bit. Singing sounded studio produced. It was ok, just not great.

Yeah, the last scene of the characters singing "Beauty and the Beast" threw me off

I liked the movie. They added a few different musical numbers that were so so. A lot of people complained and are still complaining about Emma Watson's singing. I thought she did fine. The one I had mixed feelings about was Luke Evans. Though he did display range, I still believe they should of cast someone else in the role. 8/10.

nemesis617 gomezaddams666With BatB, the songs were one of the things they had to get right when remaking the classic. I was always weary of the Emma Watson casting, not because of her acting, but because of her singing. You are right, she was fine. But just fine. I had wanted them to cast unknowns, possibly theater quality people. But all of the singing was just "fine." That was a disappointment to me. The Beauty and the Beast rendition by Emma Thompson was not great at all. The scene with the dancing was pretty amazing, but the arrangement with the BatB song was not good. It felt a bit choppy, and didn't quite flow like it should have. They should have kept the same arrangement that the original had and not changed to tempo/pace. The Gaston song was my least favorite rendition. The pauses did not work. It's my favorite in the original and my least favorite in the remake. I did like The Mob song and Something There quite a bit. The new songs were good. I liked the new song with Maurice. The Beast's song was good. Just overall, the music should have been the strongest part of the remake, and it definitely wasn't. I do believe adding a bit of backstory to Beast and Belle was overall a good addition, just not enough for me to love the film.

I thought "be our guest" was phenomenal and the only aspect of the film that matched the original, it was seriously impressive, and worth the admission of IMAX 3D

I didn't like it as much as I hoped I would but still found it mostly enjoyable. And I agree completely with what you said about Gaston. He's one of my favorite Disney villains and I expected better. There were still more things about the movie that I liked rather than disliked though.

I saw this last night, and it gets a solid 8.5. It loses a point for Emma Watson. I feel like she was miscast. Nothing against the actress or her performance, but she just wasn't Belle to me. It also loses half a point for the newer songs feeling like filler. All the talk of Lefou being gay and Belle being an inventor was much ado about nothing. Lefou was effiminate and Belle inventive, but it was presented in a way that came off as very organic to the characters, and gave their real life portrayals a nice depth. Ewan M.'s voice work was a standout, as was Kevin Kline's small role. I was a little disappointed in the Beasts appearance. It was too obviously CGI, and I feel it would have been better with old school costuming and make-up. Overall, I loved it, so much I may go back and see it in 3D, just for the "Be Our Guest" sequence. And Belle's wedding gown

Gaston was supposed to be hilarious with his outsize biceps and even more outsize ego! That was my favorite characterization from the animation movie and the stage version I saw in London. I wonder why they had to make him a little more sympathetic to the audience?
