This show was never going to have a happy ending, there was no way it could. It was strange because going into the penultimate episode, it seemed like there was no way to wrap up all the loose storylines in time, yet they managed to pull it off without it seeming rushed.
I honestly think this is up there with the best finales of all time, e.g. Six Feet Under. People were expecting a big shootout, but The Americans has never been all about the action. It has always centred around the family, and tension has always been its main selling point, and the finale had tons of it.
The garage scene with Stan is arguably one of the best scenes in the entire series. The dilemma he faced was so difficult. He knew they weren't going to let him arrest them but he couldn't bring himself to hurt any of them. Philips speech was fantastic and had so much truth to it. Stan really was his only real friend in the world. I was half expecting Philip or Elizabeth to try and rush him to let the others escape, but the way it went far exceeded my expectations.
After that, it seemed like plain sailing, until the train scene. When Elizabeth panicked looking out of the window, I expected Paige to be in police custody. Her decision to leave her parents and be there for her brother was so heart-breaking in more ways than one.
I love how they left so many things to the viewers imagination without having to spell everything out. Olegs fate, the truth about Renee, Philip and Elizabeths future in Russia...
I'm certainly going to miss The Americans.

This show was never going to have a happy ending, there was no way it could. If Philip and Elizabeth had turned themselves in to FBI custody as Russian agents and sought asylum, they could have provided the US with info on Russian methods and been assigned new identities as American citizens. They might have had to lie about all those murders ... I honestly think this is up there with the best finales of all time, e.g. Six Feet Under. By the time he confronted them in the garage, you could see from a mile away that he was going to let them go.

I also wonder if Paige would be seen as innocent.

I'm certainly going to miss The Americans. Great summary. I wish the show as a whole had been as restrained as its finale. "Stan really was his only real friend in the world." Yeah, they're workaholic spies and frequently murderers, but I did feel sorry for them because they had no real friends, no one who really knew them except their handlers, who were using them; and of course they had each other. I really felt this in a past season when Elizabeth was befriending that Korean woman to get to her husband. Watching that it struck me that Elizabeth never has had a genuine social interaction of this kind since being in the U.S.. I was disappointed that the director didn't have Keri Russell show some wistful feeling over this, Elizabeth just was her usual automatonic self doing her mission.

The way the story was told, you can't help but end up feeling sorry for the Jennings, of course.
But when you look at the bigger picture, and consider all the lives they ruined, they arguably deserved to be miserable.

Thought it was a decent show. Liked the premise. Love spy shit. Matthew Rhys was very good. Honestly it was starting to get stale and boring to me. The last few episodes were finally getting interesting again but can't say I'll miss it.

Ever seen Kate McKinnon's miserable Russian character on SNL? www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Kz5l2mRvmY

The reddit boards have a lot more traffic. Probably even more on FB, but haven't checked.
