I say, have JJ Abrams think that the last jedi never even happened. Have him direct another episode VIII that has nothing to do with the one that came out 6 months ago.
Either that or just call it episode IX but have it pick up right where TFA left off. That way at least Mark Hamill could reprise his role, and not regret it this time.

Brilliant idea. Now what's the explanation for why Luke is f***ing off on Planet Ireland while multiple planets are being destroyed by his nephew? He was just waiting for a ride the whole time?
People are so pissed that Luke changed over the course of 30 years (completely unlike any human being ever) but what we got is the only answer that makes sense for where JJ left the character. Not to mention underlining the point the prequels made.

Too late.
Disney did what it wanted to do and doesn't care what people think.
People expect too much from trans-national corporations.

They care the "Solo" boycott lost them $80 million. Trust me. Or, they want movies starring "pale male" leads to do less well so they can claim the future is dark (literally). There was John Carter, which they marketed poorly (and Disney claimed to be the experts on marketing) ditto with the Lone Ranger. If Disney cared about domestic audiences they would not have the political agenda so front and center (and increasingly so). They are arrogant for sure, maybe they figure it wont be too long before they remove all competition so you either watch their crap or nothing. Disney isn't known for being very open with their film archives and this is one of the fears of their takeover of FOX-that they will keep the catalogue closed. They do not want people watching old stuff.

It's possible for a character to become cynical, jaded, disillusioned, etc. Luke is human just like the rest of us you know.

Kyle off Kylo Ren and make Darth Plagueis the main villain. The character is one of the most boring villains I have seen in a move and Rey deserves somebody who is more of a challenge and more powerful and scary like Darth Vadar. Kylo is just an angry little boy who didn't get hugged enough as a child and now he is acting out 'cause nobody loved him. Boohoo. Go with the 'Obi Wan' movie based between' Revenge of the Sith' and 'A New Hope' with Obi Wan facing Darth Vader again but losing and surviving and have Yoda appear in it.

I would like to know, however, why did Luke left a map of his location with R2 if he went there to die. It feels like they didn't think things trough.

R2 had the whole map in his database already to fill in the missing part that Luke would be in.
The unknown question is how the dude Poe met with get the map section that still had Luke's location missing, but it's unknown because it's not important.

Why would you pretend The Last Jedi never happened and pick up from where TFA left off? Did you miss the whole fact that TFA is the movie that ruined the franchise?
The best option for SW to take is for them to sell the rights back to George Lucas and he makes a proper Episode VII.
