the idea that he would stay in jail for 20 years was not realistic at all. He had every reason to want to escape right away to find his daughter and obviously he could do it as an old man so...
20 years of mourning his wife until he sees his arch enemy?
Would have made more sense if he assumed the guy and his daughter were dead and then learned they were not 20 years later.

And supposedly Zorro had seen a lot of misery and summary executions in his day. Was he really that much of a sap over his wife? Would have made more sense for him to want to break out as quickly as possible and hope a ship back to Spain to seek them out. Incidentally-there is a 1960s European Zorro film where he is in prison for 20 years and his daughters rescue him. Still trying to track that one down.
