I'm thrilled that he is, for nostalgic purposes, but for narrative purposes. it's pointless. Nick Castle only played the masked version of Michael Myers, i.e., "The Shape." We never see his face. The unmasked version of Michael Myers (in the picture below) was played by Tony Moran, the brother of Erin Moran, "Joanie" from Happy Days. Nick Castle, however, only appears in the new movie as the unmasked Michael Myers, a cameo as the old man in the mental asylum. When Myers dons his mask, he's mostly being played by a new stuntman. So you'd think, logically, if they wanted to get the original actor for the unmasked scenes, for continuity purposes, they would have contacted Tony Moran, since it is Moran's face we see in the original, not Nick Castle's. In addition to that, Michael Myers is supposed to be 61 years old. Castle is in his 70s while Moran is almost 61. Tony Moran and Michael Myers have basically both aged together in real time. Moran is also taller than Castle, and has distinct facial features that would make a better elderly/upper middle-aged Michael Myers. Castle could be swapped for any older man to play the part. It's more fan service/homage to the original than anything to do with continuity. .

Fan service is ok though, and I'm sure he will be featured in some of the less physical stalking and standing around moments, so he's setting the template for the other guy.. plus I doubt we are gin a get a good look at his face. Not in that scene at least.
So yeah, it's fan service, but that's fine, especially since it doesn't really matter who is in the mask as long as he moves like Michael Meyers.

I suppose it's just a treat for the true fans, or for nostalgia purposes as you said.

I'm positive it will not hurt or hinder the film in any way, shape or form. It's just a fun easter egg of sorts for us fans.

It's lame ass marketing. They think that after countless sequels and even one or two reboots, they can create new buzz by bringing back the original stunt man.
Jesus Christ talk about creative bankruptcy.
But that is a good point--would have made more sense to bring back Moran.
PS I'll never think of Joanie the same way again now.

From the trailer, it looks like all the sequels have been ignored, and this is the only sequel to the first Halloween. If I remember correctly, seeing Michael's real face as an adult was something of a disappointment. All that demonic action, and he looked like a shlub.

^^^ Love the avatar. Psycho II, criminally under-rated still to this day.

It really wasn't necessary to see his face at all in the first, it was just a man's face. If he was hideously disfigured or something, then it might have been more of a shock value. I dont think showing his face in the original was necessary either--in fact I think it was counter productive because it diminished the mystery. I also think it was a mistake to show the child's face at the start. He didnt look scary at all and undermines Loomis' description about Devil's eyes.
I can see why they did it for dramatic effect and editing coherence but might have been better if the camera was moving around the kid as the parents approached so it is on the tracking away shot as they remove the mask. Then you could see it was a child and not need the face shot.

I remember reading that he only has a cameo in it and it's a "passing the torch" sort of thing to the actor (James Jude Courtney) playing him through most of this movie.
Castle is 70 years old. I doubt he could do a lot of the stunts that are required to play this character.
