EVEN though they ARE the two MOST-POPULAR of the classic tv Westerns. I find them both DULL and BORING compared to the others. I MUCH PREFER: 'Have Gun - Will Travel', 'Cheyenne', 'Maverick', 'Yancy Derringer', 'The Iron Horse', 'The Virginian', 'Wagon Train', 'The Rifleman', 'The Big Valley', 'Lawman', 'Wanted: Dead or Alive', 'Kung Fu', 'Cimarron Strip', 'The Range Rider', 'Branded', 'The Guns of Will Sonnet', 'The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp', 'Sugarfoot' and 'Bat Masterson.

My favorites are Virginian and Big Valley. And yes, I never cared for Bonanza. I doubt if any "second son" likes it, since they really dogged the second son by making him the "Hoss". Big Valley didn't dog the second son.
I really like your icon from War of the Worlds. One of the great death scenes. I always felt that the actor ate that up and had lots of fun off set with that one.

Drysex, what do/did you think of 'Gunsmoke'?It's okay. The banter with Doc and Festus is a bit fun, but they overdo it on Festus being less than a deputy too much. I liked the episode with the pool player for the switch ending, but overall I'm not as keen on Gunsmoke as I am the exciting Westerns. I'm in agreement with you pretty much here.

Even though I DON'T CARE for either of them...I'd take 'Gunsmoke' over 'Bonanza'. My personal favorite tv-Western IS 'Have Gun - Will Travel'. Cheyenne Bodie from 'Cheyenne' IS my favorite tv cowboy.

In fact, I'd take 'Little House on the Prairie' (another show with the late Mr. Michael Landon) over 'Bonanza', even though I don't know IF it's considered a Western, or NOT. Takes place in the same time-period BUT being in Minnesota and NOT more OUT WEST, I'm just not so sure...

In the 1960s I watched Gunsmoke and Bonanza, but I was really young and eventually grew tired of them. Gunsmoke was okay at times, but Bonanza seemed too tame. I preferred Rawhide and The Rifleman. 20 years later I watched syndicated episodes of Rawhide again and I had forgotten how good some of the stories were. By the time the 70s came along, I was kinda burned out on Westerns. I still loved to watch Kung Fu, though.

I’ve seen very few shows from that era but anytime I stop over my Paps house he’s watching an episode of Wagon Train. I have to say I find it fairly enjoyable. Each episode is pretty self contained and they were mostly interesting enough.

We used to watch "Gunsmoke." I never recall being particularly excited by it, though.
