Isn't that what was said about the original? If I want a so-bad-it's-good flick, I'll watch the Ron O'Neal one - or its sequel, Super Fly TNT.

I saw it on Wed afternoon. Not as bad as the TV spots and trailers made it out to be, but definitely way too glossy and idealized for such a reportedly grimy and dangerous business.
Went in thinking that a good chunk of the movie was going to look like a music video with Director X directing it, and I was right. He's not bad with the scenes that require action and bigger setpieces, maybe too much reliance of slo-mo but I've certainly seen worse directed action.
Like that the story more or less follows the 1972 version but not completely. As stated above, the grittiness is missing along with the weight and social themes.
Most of the characters are stereotypes, but Jason Mitchell is always on point with his energy and charisma. If he were a bit taller I could see him as Priest. Michael K always brings an edge and gravitas to everything. Trevor Jackson was a mixed bag; he's got some talent, but I think Priest needed to be played by an older, more experienced actor to be more believable. Jackson's only 21, felt dwarfed at times here.
I'm going with a 5/10.

Still waiting for that biopic about Latarian Milton. Working titles include "It's Fun To Do Bad Things," "Hoodrat Stuff With My Friend," and (my favorite) "He Smokes With Cigarettes."

I'm going with a 5/10. really, 5/10? I was so bored. Yes Priest should have been played by an older and more charismatic actor for one. But the way it was shot was so unatmospheric and stupid. I was (similar like the OP) also hoping it was going to be so bad that I would enjoy it, but its not, its just….really really boring. I mean the girls looked good and the shots of the city were nice, but everything else seemed quite bad/boring. And I was hoping that a music video director would be able to give it more sex-appeal. 3/10 from me.

It doesn't start in Australia until August, so will just have to wait. I still want to see it. I wouldn't expect a masterpiece, but I have been thinking along the lines of Roth's Death Wish, a polished b grader, that was fun and enjoyable to watch. oh thats sweet of you. yeah I was also hoping for something like Death Wish. But the problem with this was that it was missing someone of the caliber of Willis/Donofrio with their charisma. And the dialogues were lame to the point of making it sound soap-opera like. To be honest: I walked out after about an hour so it may have gotten better toward the end, I wouldnt know. As you probably know, its very rare for me to walk out of movies this was the first one this year I think. And I watched some shitty movies. I mean Acrimony was easier (more fun) to watch for me. This should have been a 15 minut silent videoclip, if done by this director, or have someone else make it, who doesnt (so blatantly) prefer form over substance.

Agree with you, Acrimony did have a level of crazy, bizarre fun. Miles better lead performance. Yeah, I stick with 4.5-5/10. As ridiculous as some of it looked, I kind of liked the action scenes near the end with the car chase and the Scarface-esque shootout. MKW and Mitchell added a good deal to the movie imo.
