The only author I can't wait for paperback is, strangely enough, Dan Brown. I just enjoy his books so much that I spring for the hardcover as soon as it comes out.
Another one might be Patrick Lee. I think his last book was the first to get a hardcover release and I bought it straight away.

The only ones I buy in hardback now are the Skulduggery Plesant books by Derek Landy .... Aimed at the YA audience im not ashamed to say I read them and find them to be brilliant

The only time I've done this was for the last 3 Harry Potter books. I didn't want to have to avoid message boards for months at a time waiting for the trade paperbacks to come out.

A few years ago, it was Clive Cussler or Naomi Novik. Now it's William Dietrich if possible.

I don't actually have a preference. Which is weird because for so many other things I do.

I bought Thomas Pynchon's 'Mason & Dixon' (which I loved), 'Vineland' (which I meh), and 'Against the Day' (which I ugh) in hardcover. I haven't bought 'The Bleeding Edge' in hardcover or softcover.
