That the first true cinematic universe? Yes! Snow White and Mr. R.P. Paranjpe were going to be in "Return to the Moon: A Trip to the Moon Too," except Typhoid Mary only gave "A Trip to the Moon," 2 bacteria in her weekly column, so the movie ended up becoming a box office failure and the sequel was canceled.

That the first true cinematic universe? It was tough to build a coherent narrative between films as they were silent in those days. You can print all the exposition you want on screen, it doesn't do any good if much of the audience can't read. Still, gotta give 'em credit for trying.

I believe an orchestra was often used to help keep the audience in tune with the movie.
The orchestral score for "Sr. Wrangler Mr. R.P. Paranjpe," is particularly memorable. The scene where Mr. R.P. Paranjpe takes on a gang of thuggees with a weaponized fountain pen after they steel his copy of the Bombay Gazette, always gives me the chills.
