This movie arguably contains Joan Crawford's best performance during her tenure at MGM, although I also liked her in GRAND HOTEL. It was well directed and photographed (in noir style), pretty well written, and superbly acted.
My only complaint is when Crawford's character, Anna Holm, had an "epiphany" and fell out of love with the villain (superbly played by the underrated Conrad Veidt), which prevented her from killing the child who stood between Veidt and a huge inheritance.
Too be sure, Richard Nichols was a cute little tyke, in both this film and in ALL THIS AND HEAVEN, TOO, although, IMHO, he was a lousy actor. In fact, he reminds me of the boy in THREE ON A MATCH on WB--cute as a button, but couldn't act to save his life! In fact, it was the ordinary-looking kids--like the tragic Bobby Driscoll--who had the real talent. I think I understand the belief that children should be seen and not heard, LOL.
Too bad that after this great film, Crawford was assigned to a series of turkeys, such as SUSAN AND GOD, REUNION IN FRANCE, and ABOVE SUSPICION, which ended her reign at MGM and made her move to WB.

A young Ingrid Bergman in En kvinnas ansikte 1938, that Hollywood remade with Joan Crawford ( I don't know if Bergman was ever considered for the Hollywood remake. Same story 1933 France, the poster suggests Little Red Riding Hood La mujer marcada 1957, a Mexican movie is to my knowledge the last time that story was movie into a film

...my personal favorite Joan Crawford film is "Rain" co-starring a young Walter Huston. In this film, Joan is gorgeous...
