i don't like small talk in terms of what do you do for a living? because my job should be as normal as anything, in nyc we're SPECIAL so there is a different term for it that no one in the world knows about.
in terms of nice weather, that kind of thing... cool.
i really hate what i call small talk from my parents to you via me. yes. my parents used to ask me about my colleagues and where they went to school and shit. and when i wouldn't know [because we don't talk about that shit at my school] my parents would get on MY case and accuse me of not taking an interest in my colleagues.
even with me telling them my colleagues think i am weird for asking these questions [don't care one way or another where the hell you went to school, i am glad you're here now] they disregard that. fk you.

i dont mind it, but i have days when i really struggle with it and end up saying something completely stupid and/or incoherent or oddly personal instead of talking about mundane nonsense. but on other days i welcome it as an acceptable social contact for that day. usually when i am feeling hermitish but dont wanna feel like a complete hertmit i engage in some small talk with either the uber driver or my corner deli guy, and then i feel like i did my social deed for the day and can go back to sitting behind the computer and writing in peace.

No, it sucks ass. I hate dealing with it, so whenever someone tries to engage in some with me I usually give short answers and try to get out of there ASAP.
If people don't have anything interesting to say, they shouldn't say anything at all.

That's one of my biggest pet peeves. "What do you do?" Why the hell does it matter what I do, dumbass? I do whatever the hell I want to do. These people are so simpled minded they think life is just about a career. What is the special NYC term? That is annoying. But I guess I can understand why they would think that. Back in their day people were more caring to one another. Cut to now, no one cares about anyone. They only care what is on their smartphone screens. Tell them that the world has changed.

We need more Mia Wallace's in the world. The personality part, not the coke addict and hanging out with criminals part.

Tell them that the world has changed. the nyc term. cluster teacher. well we know the the motherfucking hell a cluster is. does that mean you teach in groups or clumps? no. I am a SPECIALIST. like a LIBRAIAN, PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER [who is wrongly called the GYM teacher -- gym is a place you dumbass principal!] or MUSIC TEACHER. but nooooooooooooooooooooooo, WE HAVE TO BE SPECIAL IN NYC. ITs not about me telling them the world has changed. i have. and its not about people were more caring back then. those questions back then were considered okay to ask. now they are apparently not. and now, they have become the people they hate and the people you mention who care about their smartphones. i was on a cross country trip with them last summer and i sent multiple pictures to my sister of them both scrolling their phones at the dinner table. 'greetings from Pasadena'
LOL.

I like it well enough. It breaks the ice when meeting someone for the first time and can ease the seriousness of other conversations.

I generally don't care for it. but I guess it depends on the topic. but I think for the most part I just give simple answers to end that conservation unless it somehow goes into something decent which is not likely even though it might happen a little once in a while.
p.s. on a side note... I just changed my IMDb2 avatar back to the anomaly (i.e. Vera Farmiga) ; I found that picture on her Twitter account as it's from this month. Roberto I pretty much agree with you on this one. but in all honesty... I probably act that way partially due to social anxiety primarily as that kind of makes me default to minimal interaction with others who I am not familiar with. but with that said... I guess it depends on what's said as some people are just better at talking about random things with others than some people are as most people you just try to give basic answers and move on.

Oh don't get me wrong, I am definitely interesting in hearing about people's interesting jobs. But it should come up naturally, once you get to know them a little more. It shouldn't be the first thing they ask when they meet you.

It shouldn't be the first thing they ask when they meet you. hmm, ok, let me think. Hi i am Nora I am Caeser Wow, what a cool name Thanks Why did your parents pick that particular name, do you know? No special reason, just liked the way it sounds. Oh ok. So nothing to do with Julius Caesar? I guess not. Or you being hairy? What? Well thats what the name refers to from Latin. Oh I never knew that. Well now you know. Thanks! U r welcome. Btw, what do you do Caesar? With such interesting name, I am sure you were predestined for big things. I am a parking lot attendant. Well thats great! Where? It would be nice to know a familiar face in a parking lot. But what if your name was john?Hi I am Nora Hi, I am John. Nice to meet you John. you too How are you enjoying this party? Its fun. I guess like any other silent clubbing event I have been to. Right? Do you go to a lot of these events, John? Whenever I can. Awesome, me too! And what do you do, John? I am a forensic accountant for the FBI Wonderful. Will you marry me? Oh I would love to but I am already married. For now. Wink. So… depending on the rarity of your name its 3rd or 4th question I may ask if we meet at a party it seems.

No, it sucks ass. I hate dealing with it, so whenever someone tries to engage in some with me I usually give short answers and try to get out of there ASAP. If people don't have anything interesting to say, they shouldn't say anything at all. This sentence reminds me of a live album by the inimitable Tom Lehrer ( That Was the Year That Was), specifically the introductory material to "National Brotherhood Week", where he declares: "I realize there are those of us who do not love their fellow human beings...and I hate people like that!" Hmm. Now that I've typed it out, I have to admit I don't see a lot of similarity between what he said and what you said...and yet, that's what I thought of when reading your post. C'est la vie... Wait--here's another quotation from the same source (though perhaps not from the same introduction), regarding the concept of "failure to communicate": "I feel that if a person cannot communicate, then the very least he* can do is to shut up." A little closer resemblance, methinks. I'm still leaving the first quotation in this post, though, simply because I love that album. By the way, in the survey, I chose the "don't hate it/don't love it" response, but I can absolutely understand why people would hate it. Small talk can be a real time-waster. *Note the correct subject-verb usage. So few people employ it these days ( TWTYTW came out in 1965).
