Wow, yeah. Can't imagine anyone taking that list seriously and citing sone of those as especially scary. It seems, in some cases, that it's intended to push people off. I guess many lists are supposed to do that.
But at least those are all perfectly decent films. It didn't include The Conjuring or something.

The Conjuring is arguably scarier than some of the ones on the list.

I can't believe Don't Torture A Duckling actually made that list!! That was nothing more than a sub-par giallo and wasn't scary in the least.

I thought Don't Look Now (1973), number one on this list, was a total waste of time. Not a good list, not a good guide. Some of these are not even horror films. Both the Conjuring movies were equally good. Couldn't pick one over the other, so the author of this list decided to leave both out. Besides, Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) & The Others (2001) are not on this list.

To me, there's NO SUCH THING as a SCARY film. Disturbing, yes...BUT scary, no. Also, films can be gory and bloody. I don't know what the MOST-DISTURBING movie I've EVER seen was/is although Wolf Creek (2005) IS VERY disturbing. HOWEVER, the GORIEST and BLOODIEST flick I EVER recall watching would have to be The Evil Dead (1981) which had NOT just BUCKETS-OF-BLOOD...BUT RIVERS-OF-BLOOD. IF you've seen it and don't remember that then you were probably watching an EDITED version. I HAVE NEVER SEEN MORE BLOOD IN ANY OTHER FILM. And I've seen a lot of blood in the movies.

Wolf Creek is unsettling, but doesn't approach the most disturbing I don't think. The Shining has an elevator full of blood. I think just by volume that's gotta be up there. May not be gory but in terms of gallons appearing on screen, its a contender.

The Conjuring is arguably scarier than some of the ones on the list. Arguably, but I'd also argue that it's not as good, probably, as any on the list. The one that surprised me most is Dead of Night. I liked that one, but can't imagine many found it especially frightening, and it's pretty high up there.

I've seen scarier shopping lists, but at least they had the good sense to acknowledge Night of the Living Dead (1968), but at number 21 though?

It loses points for including Silence of the Lambs...while very good is hardly worthy of a top pick on āscariestā films of all time.
Iāve never even heard of no. 1 but maybe thatās my own fault. If anything this list will hopefully give me some new (old) movies to watch.

Where the blue fuck is Texas Chainsaw Massacre? And for once and for all, Suspiria is not that scary! Maggots are gross, not scary!

There's critics' lists and audience lists. In the end audiences decide what endures over time.
A film like The Blood on Satan's Claw was ignored by critics when it came out yet gained fans over the decades.

American Psycho was a comedy, I donāt know what this Guardian writer is on about.
The Babadook is way overhyped.
I also feel like these lists over-praise classic horror movies from decades ago. Yes, a horror movie made in 1960 or 1945 may be seminal and influential, but does it really deserve a place a list of āscariestā horror movies? Not unless it holds up over time. For example, Alien is almost 40 years old but is still terrifying. A movie like Psycho was scary in its time, but now itās quaint in comparison to some of the stuff weāve seen. That doesnāt make it less entertaining, or diminish its value as a movie, but it should impact its place as a āscaryā film.

Don't Look Now is a fine film, but not in any way scary. Not even the famous twist reveal.

Itās a fine list, but as for being scary. Personally, some choices are odd, but then again itās a mute argument when it comes to what you find frightening. Like the filmās themes/or content than just say mood, or scares.

I haven't seen it but Don't Look Now is an odd choice for #1 indeed. For once, The Exorcist isn't at the very top.
But yeah not a very good list IMO, and most of these movies aren't that scary.

Some fine movies listed there, but no way do I agree with that list. Don't Look Now (1973) at #1? Eh...no.
