A great read about the history of recorded sound and production techniques: David Keenan's England's Hidden Reverse, about three great post-Industrial bands Coil, Current 93, and Nurse With Wound:

I bought a CD of Chopin music, which came with a biography of him. I really enjoyed that.

It Crawled From the South, Marcus Gray's entertaining biography of R.E.M.
I haven't read many music books, and most have been disappointing. Just today I ditched Our Band Could Be Your Life after reading just the Minutemen chapter, because when I bought it, I kinda didn't realize it's by the sycophantic hack who wrote Come As You Are.

I have 2 of the Joel Whitburn Top 40 books. Great references, especially when you can't quite remember who sang that song. Also "Beatles Gear" by Andy Babiuk.

David Toop - Ocean Of Sound (there's a companion CD that's also excellent) Simon Reynolds - Generation Ecstasy I'm starting Reynold's Rip It Up And Start Again: Postpunk 1978-1984, and so far it's great. Planning on reading Legs McNeil's Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History Of Punk soon.
