I'm opposed to racism, of course, but a lot of older movies reflect the attitudes, values, and prejudices of their time. It is unfortunate, but I don't blame the movie for that and it doesn't lessen the quality of the film. I agree with you, sort of. I saw GONE WITH THE WIND on the big screen 4 times when I was a teenager, and loved it. Seen it countless times on DVD and TV, but I just can't watch it anymore. Sorry. I love MANDINGO, though. What do you think of this one? Mandingo lit the fuse. Drum was the explosion.

Saw both many years ago before I truly appreciated the classics. Citizen Kane was the one that had any kind of effect on me at that time, GWTW seemed like an over long bloated epic then. I'd probably like it more now that I have a etter appreciation for Gable etc.

You think Citizen Kane is not racist ? Did you see any black people in Citizen Kane that did not work as a servant for a white man ? They were not slaves. BEcause there were no slaves in the USA at that time. But black actors were still mainly shown as servants. but in Gone With the Wind, although Mammy is a slave at the beginning, she is still a very important character, the only person Scarlett actually listens to, and Hattie Macdaniel deservedly won best supporting actress for the role.
