These would be highlights that have been replayed over and over again so often that even casual fans recognize it and know what it is:
Baseball - Bill Buckner and Steve Bartman are strong contenders but I think the most iconic moment was Kirk Gibson's home run off Dennis Eckersley in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series
Basketball - Michael Jordan's championship-winning shot against Utah in Game 6 of the 1998 NBA Finals.
Football - David Tyree's helmet catch against New England in Super Bowl XLII.
Figure Skating - Nancy Kerrigan sitting on the floor crying in agony after Shawn Eckhardt did a number on her knee.
Horse Racing - Secretariat sprinting to the Finish Line at the 1973 Belmont, with no other horse in the same zip code.
Ice Hockey - the final moments of USSR vs USA at the 1980 Winter Olympics, when Al Michaels says "Do you believe in miracles?"

Yes, that's the most iconic moment in football history. Not "The Catch" or "The Drive," that moment just because it came against he Patriots.
Gimme a fuckin break.

Football - Joe Namath’s guarantee; the Immaculate Reception; Dwight Clark’s Catch; The Drive; Wide Right (sorry GoodMan); One Yard Short; The Tuck Rule play; the Butt Fumble (just kidding); take your pick. Though I think the Helmet Catch is actually a reasonable choice.

Most casual fans don't know what "The Catch" was. It wasn't a Super Bowl game and it wasn't a spectacular play like David Tyree's helmet catch was and it's not a replay that is shown as often as David Tyree's helmet catch is shown. As for "The Drive", can you even name 1 specific highlight from "The Drive" that is shown over and over again? Most casual fans will remember Elway's "helicopter" spin in Super Bowl XXXII than "The Drive".

Cricket: Jones...Bowden! Kasprowicz the man to go and England have won one of the most thrilling matches the world has ever known by 2 runs. I think Australia's winning moment in 99 WC semifinal is also an iconnic moment for cricket. Obviously because it was an exciting match but also because it set almost a decade long domination of the game by Aussies.
Sir Don's last ball in international cricket. Sir Don is an undisputed Goat as opposed to Pele, Maradona. Jordan etc.
Javed Miandad's last ball 6 is one of the most iconic moments of ODI cricket.

Buckner and Gibson off Eckersley are good contenders but the Bartman play is not. The Willie Mays over the shoulder catch is another.
