Watched this 70s horror classic last night on my Anchor Bay DVD. This is one I can never get tired of viewing. For those not familiar with the plot, it concerns two couples vacationing in an RV; they must flee for their lives after the men (played by legendary actors Peter Fonda and Warren Oates) are discovered witnessing a satanic ritual, and quickly learn that there is apparently a large network of satanists operating across Texas. Talk about being at the wrong place at the wrong time! Race With The Devil scores big points for creating a supremely creepy atmosphere of paranoia. We have these sympathetic characters who are constantly pursued by the devil-worshipping fiends and just about everybody they meet seems to be in on the conspiracy. I love the scene in which Lara Parker is getting unwanted stares by these strange-looking people as she is trying to enjoy a nice swim; this really set the tone of paranoia. As the film hits the hour mark, it suddenly turns into a car chase/smash-up flick. And those car stunts were amazingly done and thrilling. A pickup truck explodes as it drops off a bridge, a big car flips over a dozen times, and so on. Probably some of the best stunts ever captured on film. If you think about the plot too much some holes do start to show. But just accept it for what it is; a fun, enjoyable horror/car chase flick.

Great film! I think it gets better every time I see it.
Quite a jolting thrill-ride once it kicks into gear and the final freeze frame shot perfectly ends on a chilling note. Definitely a sleeper when it comes to 70s horror.

When you race with the Devil you better be faster than Hell!
And no surprise Peter Fonda is the troublemaker. If he had just left the soil alone and not collected the blood sample...

I think the supernatural element of the film surprised me a little. The advertising on the poster just makes it out to be some generic action car chase thriller. There's the eerie tree at the start with the music--but then it goes into good ol boy motorcycle camper mode until the sacrifice scene.
"We're goin' skiin'!"
Lara Parker has an impressive fit of hysterics over her dog.
"You killed my little dog!"
The chase scenes in BREAKDOWN reminded me of this.

Well directed by Jack Starrett who played the mean Deputy opposite Stallone in FIRST BLOOD.

I loved that creepy opening with the spooky old tree. Good eerie music score by Leonard Rosenman. In the dog scene I like it when Warren Oates yells at the gathering crowd "That door was pried open with a chisel, so don't tell me nobody saw anything!"

The funny thing about it is that there were lots of Satanism movies but in this case the supernatural element is minimal. One assumes the Devil had a hand in the ending, but they could have just been tricked by road signs into going in circles.

It's great fun. A well-paced, exciting, spooky drive-in classic.
I have a double feature Blu that pairs it with another P. Fonda favourite, "Dirty Mary Crazy Larry".

My favourite Warren Oates line: "I don't believe a school bus on Sunday."
