The Silence of the Lambs is my favorite movie of all time.
Hannibal is brilliantly OTT. It's like The Silence of the Lambs turned into a twisted fairy tail.

Manhunter, although Cox wasn't as good as Hopkins.

Very haunting and frightening in tone. It works as a sequel to The Silence of the Lambs and exists in it's own world at the same time. It's also a bit on the campy side, which makes it all the more strange and effective.

I don't see it as Lecter being a hero. He is a villain we both love and hate and that is the whole point. This movie just takes it a step further. Hannibal Lecter is the protagonist but he is never really the hero. The tone and the writing make that perfectly clear to me. Hannibal Lecter is only the "hero" in context of the Mason Verger story line and this works because Verger has even less morals than Lecter. The brain scene is sickening and it is meant to make us look at Hannibal Lecter as the monster he truly is. It removes the illusion that he is any kind of hero. The same when he murders the inspector.

Movies that I find UGLY in tone are the Hellraiser movies, specifically Hellraiser III. They are sadistic fetishistic trash.

Perhaps not the Inspector, but he's a fairly minor character. Lector is entertaining in Lambs, but I don't feel we were ever asked to root for him, and I didn't like being asked to root for him here, against Verger or otherwise.
