A villain's smile can be a memorable moment in a movie. It's not something as over-the-top as a laugh, but it's not really subtle either. We don't fear the concept of a villain being happy; we fear the threat of a villain who feels they're in control. This works when the actor is talented enough to convey all that with just their face. That's why the smiles in TRUTH OR DARE? aren't scary: Visual effects are used to deform the faces. They actually look silly. It's not a bad idea to make a horror movie based on a game, but it is a bad idea to make a supernatural horror movie based on a game that, in real life, has nothing to do with death or to entities that are out of this world. We've seen many movies where ghosts, demons, etc. can easily kill people but prefer to mess with their minds. However, I can't imagine an entity that haunts humans and chooses to adhere to rules made up by us. Especially for a game that mostly children and sometimes teenagers play. The performances are decent and the directing is better than most modern horror movies with/for teenagers (the cinematography isn't so dark that we can't see, there are almost no jump scares and the editing never hides anything (the moment where a hammer breaks a hand was impressive)), which makes the script look worse than what it really is. Too much time is dedicated to the main characters' personal problems, but they become irrelevant when they die. The only exception is the gay character. Yes, he has a name, but the character (while not an effeminate stereotype) is only represented by his sexuality. Anyway, the game forces him to come out of the closet to his dad (which results in a tragedy later)... and guess what? The movie skips that moment! We only see him telling this friends what happened! By the way, the characters seem to get over each death after a few minutes. The ending is so stupid that I'd like to spin throw a bottle to kill the makers, so they can spend 7 minutes eternity in Heaven.
