They have both been mentioned already, but my favorites would probably be THE LAST PICTURE SHOW and the John Sayles' classic LONE STAR - two films I love with a passion deep and true. www.youtube.com/watch?v=UffK-IHM1B0
It's not a classic or anything, but a more recent small town movie I am fond of is the beautiful and inspiring, Niki Caro-directed, Kevin Costner-starring MCFARLAND USA. McFarland - which has a population of around 12 000, is one of the poorest towns in California, but this film is rich and lovely.

I haven't seen MCFARLAND USA, jefferson. But I'm a big fan of Niki Caro and can certainly relate to that particular small town landscape, living as I do in California. The trailer looks really good. A film worth renting, I think, if I can find it. Thanks for the recommendation. Im not sure if Paterson, New Jersey - population approximately 146 000 - qualifies as a small town spiderwort. But whether it does or not I would like to recommend the wonderful Jim Jarmusch film PATERSON to you. It's one of the very best films of 2016 and not to be missed. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yqiq36VYCqc

Don't think these "newer" films have been mentioned:
Doc Hollywood (1991) The Truman Show (1998) Pleasantville (1998) Mystery, Alaska (1999) Big Miracle (2012)

shield Doc Hollywood (1991) YES ! and The Majestic sort of an "odd" film that works up to a point BUT it is a "smalltown film" and worth seeing at least once. Very un-Jim Carrey-ish role and many really good supporting character and performances. .

spiderwortParis Texas LocationsI see some of the film was shot in Marathon, TX. That's not too far from Fort Davis that I mentioned earlier. Much of the film was made in California. I need to watch it one of these days. I saw it ages ago, before I had ever been to Texas.

Im not sure if Paterson, New Jersey - population approximately 146 000 - qualifies as a small town spiderwort. But whether it does or not I would like to recommend the wonderful Jim Jarmusch film PATERSON to you. It's one of the very best films of 2016 and not to be missed. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yqiq36VYCqcThanks for the recommendation, jefferson. I saw a PBS story about this film - a film in poetry - and it looked really interesting. So does the trailer. So I'll do my best to see it. I've always been intrigued by the concept of such a film, I have to say. PATERSON is sooo beautiful. It is probably not for all tastes, but if it works for you it will take your breath away spiderwort. It's a film about the way life should be. Although set in the present day it feels like its playing out in the 1950s. It has a timeless quality to it, and I loved the fact the central character does not own a cellphone. Also, if you haven't seen the lead, Adam Driver (Martin Scorsese's SILENCE, STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, the Coen brothers' INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS, Jeff Nichol's MIDNIGHT SPECIAL and currently shooting Terry Gilliam's THE MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE), in anything yet, you are in for a treat. He is a truly unique and gifted comic and dramatic actor. I first saw him in Lena Dunham's hilarious HBO series GIRLS and after one episode knew he was bound for stardom. He's absolutely fearless in the show and despite his busy schedule he has continued to appear in this little, relatively low budget series.

I know it is difficult with you starting new threads every two hours! The use of the town's name as the title is ironic. They never get to go there. Meanwhile I am losing my battle with the quoting facility here.

I thought his film, SLING BLADE (oh, another one for this thread!), was amazing, brilliant, and incredibly moving. I also thought that he was robbed of the Oscar for best actor that year.
Agreed, especially as there were no other truly outstanding competitors. But I imagine that would worry him less than many Hollywood stars. Was he even nominated?

spiderwortI want to take this opportunity to thank you for starting and maintaining so many of these interesting threads. It can't be easy to think up ideas that might get folks discussing films. IMO you are doing a great job and if they had the applause emoticon here, you would get a big one. Meanwhile

funny farm trapped in paradise nothing but trouble Haven't seen these, rateater (oh, what a name!). Something to look forward to. In the meantime, let me suggest a film that reminds me for some reason of Trapped in Paradise, though actually I guess it's sort of a reverse of the story: We're No Angels (1955) www.imdb.com/title/tt0048801/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_4And there was a remake of that, but I didn't see it: We're No Angels (1989)www.imdb.com/title/tt0098625/?ref_=nm_knf_t1i've seen the remake. i'll check out the original.

It's not set in a "small town" BUT it seems like and could easily BE one. It's an incredibly funny film with some outstanding character type performances by some pretty big name folks. The 'BurbsEveryone knows everyone else and everyone gets into everyone else's business . Does that not seem "small town"ish (Hollywood style?)?
