"The Last Picture Show", 1971, takes place in West Texas town, called Anarene. It is a lovely, sweet, unpretentious film. "The Last Picture Show" is just about the final word on the particular brand of bittersweet that eats away at your soul. It is a simple film, and a quietly shattering movie as well.

This is one of my all-time favorite films, DP. A masterwork, in my opinion, for all the reasons you state. I love the novel, too. And "Anarene" in real life was the home town of Larry McMurtry, who wrote the novel upon which TLPS is based: Archer City, Texas, a very small town near Wichita Falls. McMurtry, author of so many wonderful novels, including "Terms of Endearment," "Lonesome Dove," and, my favorite, "Horseman, Pass By," which became the film HUD, was born and raised in Archer City and lived there most of his life, even after his renowned success. He even opened and ran a bookstore there until his death last year at the age of 84, RIP. To say that he was a master of recreating small town life is an understatement. If you haven't read the novel, I recommend it.
Oh, and he won an Oscar for adapting Annie Proulx's BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, another small-town story, though not much of it takes place actually in the town.

It's not a classic or anything, but a more recent small town movie I am fond of is the beautiful and inspiring, Niki Caro-directed, Kevin Costner-starring MCFARLAND USA. McFarland - which has a population of around 12 000, is one of the poorest towns in California, but this film is rich and lovely.

Just recently saw this, jefferson aka stryker , and really enjoyed it. Uplifting story, very well done by Niki Caro and all the cast. Especially loved the ending with the real people.

Independence Day (1983). Set in a New Mexico town but shot in Anson, Texas. The population there is 2400 people today.

Fictional account of the funeral of 1920's Broadway actress Olga Treskoff, who was born in Glen Lyon, PA, and is buried there. Partly shot on location in the village of Glen Lyon (called Coal Town in the movie).

About Cincinnati and Best Years of our lives. It is indeed true that the fly over is Cincinnati. In fact Homer’s high school football field is Tge playing field of my Alma mater Walnut Hills High school . The family home of Theda Bara is nearby. There is in the film not a single building , business, home or institution that does not have a counterpart in Cincinnati. Al’s nice large high end apartment, the homey neighborhood where Homer lived, the beaten down home of Dana ANDREWS family, Butches neighborhood bar, and the big swanky club all could be found here, especially in the 40’s and 50’s.
BUT
Wasn’t the city actually set in California?

Never Too Late 1965 took place in small town, New England, and location work was made in Concord, Massachusetts. Maureen O'Sullivan and Paul Ford. either on real streets in Concord, or Warner back lot streets.

Speaking of little gems , Robert Redford’s The Milagro Beanfield War. Small farmer v big Argo, western water rights, outsider learns Latinx culture, Redford does all this right. He used lots of local artists and actors from the mountains north of Santa Fe. He listened to stories, the film has wonderful color and the professional actors , John heard , Ruben Blades and Sonis Braga did a wonderful job. I spent every summer for about 30 years in Abiquiu, the area just south of the film sites. Georgia OKeefe painted and lived tgere.

Oh, yes, I've seen it, and I love it! It's one of my favorites. From the cast, the direction, and the wonderful story that connects humanity to nature in a profoundly moving way, it has so many merits. It's a must see for everyone, I believe. And Keisha Castle-Hughes, at the age of about 12, received a well-deserved Oscar nomination for it as best actress! I thought of it just the other day, in fact, wanting to see it again. I don't say that about many films anymore.

The Shipping News (2001) Although Spacy is miscast as the somewhat dim, overweight, well hung Quoyle, and the film is not as good as the marvelous Annie Proulx novel on which it is based, but it's still a lovely and lively adaptation of a great book.
