With Star Wars’ popularity on the decline, do you think Disney might be looking at the Avatar franchise as their next big science fiction/science fantasy franchise, and if so, do you think it can be a hit franchise beyond the first movie?

I question if the demand is there for either franchise any more.

There should be a fourth option saying: “Depends how the Avatar sequels play out.”
I am in that category.

Better question is will James Cameron live long enough to finish the series?
Because he's got them planned up to 2025

Lord, I hope not. I thought Avatar was atrocious.

I liked Avatar unironically but we're so late in the game here as far as sequels go. Cameron should have gotten off his raggedy behind to get part two out by 2012, 2014. As seen by this thread and popular culture these days, the film(s) has earned an unenthusiastic reputation.

I remember going to see the first one, I vaguely remember the movie itself, and I remember joking with the friend who I went to see it with, "I think I liked this movie better when it was a cartoon called POCAHAUNTUS", and the trailers for the new movie just haven't gotten me interested. It's like I WANT to like the movies, but for whatever reason, I just can't get into them. Don't think it's the CGI, cause I did just fine caring about Seraphina in ERAGON, Gollum in LOTR, and the apes in the newer PLANET OF THE APES films. There's just something, for me, lacking in the AVATAR stuff.
Despite that, I don't doubt it'll end up being a cash cow for Disney to milk until kingdom come.

Well, for the foreseeable future, it looks like the answer is yes.

Well, for the foreseeable future, it looks like the answer is yes. Based on what? Avatar 2 is making a lot of money, and we don’t know when there will be another Star Wars movie.

Avatar 2 is making a lot of money, and we don’t know when there will be another Star Wars movie. We don't know when there will be another Avatar movie, either. Personally, I'd say Disney's record with Star Wars movies is terrible, but Avatar was garbage to begin with so they have nothing to loser there. But when you consider all the Star Wars related content Disney has produced over the last few years compared to Avatar, it's hard to argue that they see Avatar as a bigger draw.

Again, take all the SW content on Disney+ into consideration. Have there been any announcements regarding Avatar content coming to D+? I don't know, it's a legitimate question on my part. It doesn't seem like Disney views Avatar the same way it views Star Wars at the moment. The success of Avatar 2 could change that, but there's nothing to suggest that as of yet.

Though avatar content doesn't have to be film quality. They could do animated tie-ins and what have you, like they do with the other properties. It'll be interesting to see what direction they go from here with all of these properties.
