Great film and great performance by Gloria Holden, but these early Dracula films really needed to use fangs.

One of my favorites, and one of the most underrated pictures in the Uni horror cycle. I think it’s just grand, with some superb performances from Gloria Holden and Irving Pichel—not to mention some actually-bearable romantic leads. The set pieces—Drac’s cremation, Countess Zaleska at the piano, the attack on Lili, and of course the race back to Transylvania—are first-class. (Someone pointed out to me once that the race back to Castle Dracula is how Dracula should have ended, as it is in the book.) Really a great one.

I have skipped over this and Son of Dracula (and the Mummy films) in my Universal watching. I have seen them, but not in some time. Dont think I have seen Mark of the Vampire though.

A fun vamp flick from the classic era.
Gloria Holden is Laurie Holden's paternal grandmother.
