Gene Kelly is the obvious answer, but Donald O'Connor gets overlooked a lot, he could really get his freak on, man! Totally agree. Like many, many others, I list Singin' in the Rain among my all-time favorite musicals. As wonderful a job as Gene Kelly did in that movie, I think on balance I prefer Donald O'Connor (I realize I may be biased in favor of the role he played, as my current signature may indicate ). For one thing, DO'C had, imo, the better singing voice--not that one can really tell from a novelty number (hilarious though it is) like "Make 'em Laugh". But in some of his other films, close your eyes and just listen to young Donald vocalize: he had a true, sweet tenor--something not often found in performers who were also excellent dancers.
