It's not taking any punches here trying to be something it can't. It's a film about a superhero called Ant-Man. The title alone is silly. It a breath of fresh air coming off from the likes of Infinity War. It's nothing groundbreaking for cinema. Just a small and fun story. Solid 7 for me.

Of the 8 MCU titles I've on blu, Ant-Man is one of them. There's something refreshing that the MCU isn't a one track genre with 17 or 18 or whatever number of movies they're at now. MCU is a menu of action films, adventure, drama, comedy, etc. Ant-Man is simply the more juvenile... and? It entertains me, case closed. Would I want an Ant-Man reboot later on or him leading the Avengers? No because it's not required, the MCU allows that leverage.

What makes me mad about some of the reviews for Ant-man is everyone acts like it should have been ground breaking all because it’s Marvel. The movie is called Ant-Man and the Wasp for crying out loud. It was going to be similar to the first one no doubt. Yes it was a great movie and some reviewers need to get the sticks out of their ass.

This is something that the Fox X-movies never figured out to do. They kept trying to do the same kind of movie, some better that others, but never really mixed it up till Logan.
MCU on the other hand, despite whatever claims about them being formulaic, actually have a very diverse tone for their movies. It's what allows audiences to breath in between their movies and is one main reason why there's no audience fatigue yet despite 20 movies.

I don't know if it knows its audience enough. I actually thought it took itself too seriously, especially compared to last year's triple comedy roster. We should be doubling down in the goofy fun, but mostly we have all these sob stories with Ghost and Catwoman and no action scenes nearly as entertaining as the Thomas the Train one.

And First Class was pretty into 60s era espionage movies. Well yes, Deadpool too, but that was a result mostly of Reynold's innovation so I don't want to give Fox credit for it. After all, we already know what kind of Deadpool Fox would have made if it was up to them.

I hate this logic that it has to be a weightless filler movie simply because it's Ant Man. I know it can only take itself so seriously, but that doesn't mean you can't make a truly great movie with the character. NEVER set the bar low.
That being said, I did really enjoy the movie, and will be seeing it again this weekend.
