www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-44829766"Avengers star Scarlett Johansson was set to play play 1970s Pittsburgh crime boss Dante "Tex" Gill, who was born Jean Gill, in Rub & Tug.
But she was criticised by those who said the role should have gone to a transgender actor."The damn LGBT community practically bullied her out of the role. That community is pure cancer. They complain because they aren't represented well but when a A list actor joins a movie about the subject then that isn't good enough either. Now the movie won't get a A list star and hopefully won't even be made or if it does then it'll bomb anyway and then they'll just cry more about that. This is why Hollywood shouldnt even bother representing this group. Imagine the outrage they'd cause if they were told straight characters can only be played by straight actors. Horrible, lowlife and bullying community. At least she has the Black Widow movie. Poor Scarlett.

Is there any celeb out there with guts to stand up to the SJWs? Watch the movie fail now that she has caved.

I’d imagine that there might’ve been less controversy if they got a cisgender man to play Gill.

I mean, it's too bad she missed out, but she might have dodged a bullet here.

so......the issue is that she was a cis-woman? so are they saying that if there's a character written as a homosexual then they have to find a homosexual actor? i mean......i guess? but why doesn't anyone get upset with a film like Milk, or Brokeback Mountain, or Dallas Buyers Club in retrospect? they all have straight males playing roles of gay males, heck leto is playing a transgender female.......and he got a freaking oscar.
i mean.....all this will probably lead to people saying "only women can direct women, only black people can direct black people" and it sounds like..... "nicer" version of segregation

"nicer" version of segregation Exactly. This self-segregation is terrible for society. And can somebody explain to the people complaining how acting works? Actors portray all kinds of people. As someone pointed out earlier in the thread, the film will get more notoriety with an A-list star, without them it doesn't get nearly the amount of attention it would have and possibly doesn't get made at all. These ridiculous social justice warriors are eating culture alive.

Unpopular opinion:
I see where they're coming from. It is taking a possible job from a trans actor.

I wish we lived in a world where we can just cast the best actor or actress in a role to play a character, regardless of gender, race, or sexual orientation.

That would only be possible if it existed in a world where people weren't being judged or discriminated against for their skin color, gender or sexuality. Unfortunately that's still a thing.

Unpopular opinion: I see where they're coming from. It is taking a possible job from a trans actor. That's fair, and there isn't really a reasonable argument against that fact. I just wonder where that logic ends. Can straight actors no longer play gay characters because it's taking a job away from a gay actor? Trans actors should be fighting for roles period, not segregating themselves by insisting only a trans actor can play a trans role. Do they have any clue of the hypocrisy involved in that mindset?

Your average joe could never even name one and there isn't one who would be a big of enough draw to make the movie successful. They had a A list actress attached to it who wold have brought the movie more attention and now theyre going to cast a tranny for it and it will probably bomb. Eddie Redmayne was nominated for an oscar for playing a tranny in a movie just a few years back, why didn't they cry about that then?

I get where your coming from. Personally I feel like they should hire the best possible actor/actress for the role. But at the same time since the role a trans role maybe they should have done a wider search for the actor.

But at the same time since the role a trans role maybe they should have done a wider search for the actor. Honestly I have no idea what the story behind the production is, I can only assume it's someone putting together Oscar bait material. And if that truly is their aim, I think 2018 is ready for a trans actor to take the leading role in a film like that. Again, I can't disagree with your sentiment, but I worry about the road we're going down as a society. To legitimize the project, women have to direct women, black directors have to direct black actors, etc. I think it sets an important movement back at least ten years and makes the whole thing feel contrived instead of organic. Trans actors shouldn't have to feel like they can only play trans roles in order to get their foot in the door in Hollywood; and they shouldn't feel threatened by the idea of a non-trans actor playing a trans character in a film.

It’s not reasonable. Commercial ventures, and indeed art, could be compromised by this decision. It’s easy to approve of this when it’s not your money or your job (and that includes the thousands of people working on the film) or if you don’t want the director’s vision to be considered when telling this exciting story. IF this doesn’t get made or if it gets made with a mediocre cast then the slactivists have shot themselves in the foot.

I have a reasonable argument for that. Saying trans actors are the only ones who should play trans characters would be like saying: Only gay actors can play gay characters Only straight actors can play straight characters Only Chinese actors can play Chinese characters Only 17 yr old actors can play 17 yr old characters etc. All this really does is encourage discrimination and exclusivity in the movie industry, not reduce it. Besides, how many trans actors are there in the world? There's going to be a very limited talent pool for that kind of specification.

Seriously though, I think I covered all of that in my comments. I agree with you but it still doesn't change the simple fact that currently, trans actors surely have limited options available to them; and this role is tailor made for a trans actor. That's all haunted knight was saying.
