Pros - Tom Hanks, especially that scene when he finds out he is a father. Gary Sinise does well as the unhinged Vietnam vet stereotype. Just don't call his friend stupid. The cinematography. The movie looked especially bad when cropped for television. The soundtrack Visual Effects Its use of American History
Cons - The message seems troublesome. Forrest, often through very little effort of his own, falls into great fortune and success throughout his life while remaining largely naïve. The American dream? The "Run, Forrest, Run!" scene is pretty cheesy.

I don't think the film has held up well. Sinise's performance and the scenes with him are easily the best and most enduring thing about it. Not crazy about the apparent message that down-home naivete and stupidity will best intelligence and sophistication every time; that plays a little too close to some unattractive American prejudices in favor of ignorance for my taste, but sadly that's probably one reason the film was so popular in its time.

Pros:
The acting, especially Sinise who I agree is the best part
Some amusing moments
Groundbreaking visual effects
Inspired a decent seafood chain
Cons:
It's a straight-faced, unironic version of Being There
Some gags get into eye-roll territory, ie "Imagine"
Beat Pulp Fiction and Shawshank at the Oscars

Pros:
Quotable lines are a mark of excellent writing, acting, and direction.
Seeing America and how people lived/experienced it from the 1950s - 1980s. A great pop culture time in the United States.
Bubba
Gary Sinise's finest acting IMHO
Soundtrack
Good mix of Comedy, Drama, History, Visuals, and Allegory as well as Existential moments. It's very seamless. (loved the running scenes) "I don't know where this road turned into the road I'm on... Running on..."
Cons:
Some visual effects didn't age well.

Pro: Nothing. Con: It's garbage. I f you can't find something enjoyable about Forrest Gump, I feel sorry for you. There is quite a bit of great emotional content to chew on.

Pro - Takes its time, for better or worse. A dying trait.
Con - The more I re-watch, the less I seem to care about Jenny.

Pros:
- Although it goes through the decades, it still has this timeless quality.
- It moves at a good clip despite being over two hours.
- Forrest's ill fated friendship with Bubba is genuinely touching.
- the insertion of Gump into archival footage.
- Colorful supporting cast.
- Reading analyses of the film since its release are amusing. Either people think it's too liberal or too conservative or too neutral for its own good.
Cons:
- The uncomfortable implication behind Jenny's life being hell even after leaving her dad.
- Certain scenes are heavy handed.
- It's been a while since I watched it but recalling certain scenes, is it just me or does Forrest's intelligence seem to change from vignette to vignette?

It's a self-congratulatory circle jerk for people from that generation. "Look how great we were!" And Hanks getting another Oscar for this was straight up criminal.

Pros - I really had to push it, the acting from everyone other than Hanks is pretty good. I guess Hanks acts the part well Gump just gets on my nerves.
Cons - Gump seems to be involved with or even instigates every piece of pop history of the period. I was waiting for him to end up on the moon as well. I always saw the part where he runs from coast to coast as being a comparison to Hands Across America.
He succeeds through sheer dumb luck and in spite of himself.
He pursues a woman who is clearly messed up and takes advantage of him. Can Gump even consent to sex let alone look after a kid?
How can he be so simple and yet end up making so much money and not have someone take it all from him some how?
It's just all so baby boomer and self congratulatory.

Pro - Excellent soundtrack, really helps carry the film's rather swift pacing through nostalgia.
Con - I've watched it into the ground, I can't really enjoy it as much as I used to. I've grown to despise Gary Sinise as a person, that doesn't help matters.

He's a dick. His politics are secondary. What he do? He seems to be a stickler on set with crew, with press, & yes his archaic politics. His work rate seemed to dry up fairly quickly for someone of his ilk. I bet ppl didn't wanna phone his agent for work invites.

It sounds like Sinise was ostracized by Hollywood (especially the movie division) but I don't get it. Supporting Israel--um, what big media company doesn't support Israel? He doesn't support Trump the "support the troops" guy?
As for Forrest Gump-I chuckle that people think it has a conservative message.
Wright's character is his mentor--but she also represents a thriving person. But she is destroyed. Sinise also represents a thriving person-he is destroyed in a sense too.
It is not a message of "being traditional and you will win." If that was the case then how do we explain Sinise being injured?
It even implies various inventions were due to Gump. It's a rebuke to the idea of American Exceptionalism.
Gump succeeds despite being a genetic fuck up.
The parody of it on the X-Files I like better. Cancer Man sitting with the bum talking about the disappointment of chocolate after flashbacks to all the famous people he killed.

The contrast between Being There and Forrest Gump is interesting. Being There satirizes the idea of succeeding despite being a genetic fuckup. Forrest Gump plays it straight.
The original novel of Forrest Gump is also supposed to be more satirical.
