Now i admit i have heard good country songs but most of the songs i have heard are pretty bad. Sp why is it that country music is generally awful?
Of course most of the country songs i have heard that i liked was made before 1980.
Or am i wrong in claiming hat country music is generally bad?

You should try some modern "alt" country, which is more palatable than the commercial country you find in the charts and on radio. For me, it's the hokey lyrics and annoying twangy voices.

If the music really is bad, to me, its because my late beautiful precious Steve Sanders of the Oak Ridge Boys isn't here anymore, I love him SO much!!! God bless you and his family always!!! Holly P.S. Steve is the one at the top of that picture. Go here to check out his cover of "I'll Put Angels Around You" from the Dr. Hook act. I recently heard their copy of the song for the first time and some of what comes from Steve is actually different compared to the lyrics that were already out there...which in my opinion only adds to his performance of the song. The delivery is what seals the deal though, his heart is just all over it and I will never have enough of it, if only I had discovered him sooner.

How can a genre be awful brah? It's a genre, so it has good and bad just like any other. (or at least most of them)
Don't be foolish.

There is good and bad in everything. For me, that late 70's/early 80's country music period is just torture. So when I watched Peter Bogdanovich's movie, They All Laughed (1981) recently and found it littered with bad country from this period, I was not laughing. Bogdanovich was going through a country phase and it nearly ruins the movie.

I don't think it's awful........I USED to think it was awful, but I guess I've mellowed a bit over the years. That said, I NEVER listen to it, and IMMEDIATELY reach for the radio if a country song should happen to come on, to get it off as soon as possible........but I wouldn't necessarily consider it AWFUL.

A lot of it is awful because it's supposed to be the "music of the common people" and thus aims for the lowest common denominator and is musically and lyrically banal. Or it's stupid "bro country" about trucks, dirt roads, beer, dirt roads, women, beer, dirt roads, trucks, beer and women. Then you have the modern mainstream country that barely even sounds like country. It's more like bad pop music with a twang.
I'm a fan of the older stuff and alt-country. Lucinda Williams is really good.

I dislike it because C/W ruled the house when I was growing up. Hank, Johnny, Buck, Roy, Patsy they ruled. Hell, we had to watch Hee Haw every Saturday. No Rock could be played at a level that my parents could hear.
Ironically, I can stomach the old stuff more than the new. Unlike many here, I'm more of a lyrics person. Face it, Country lyrics are not great. There's no tear in my beer, I don't have a tractor so she can't think it's sexy and all my exes still live in New York, except for my first wife who has a mailing address somewhere in Mordor.

Most of it is good in my opinion. Of course, most music period is good in my opinion.
But country is also maybe my favorite genre overall for lyrics. Not that I'm normally a big "lyrics guy," but I pay more attention to lyrics when it comes to country.

Some of the corniest lyrics that I've ever heard are country lyrics. I know that this doesn't represent the entire genre.
