One factor is that English players are currently very bad. Having great players from your country is a big advantage because you don't have to pay transfer fees for them and can normally pay them lower wages. People knock England's golden generation but their sides performed far better in Europe than current ones do.

that golden gen was way overrated (IMO) and nothing like gaza, shearer, lineker, seamna, adams, scholes, beeckham et all.
the players today are as good as the suppose golden gen. We went backwards after 96 and have remained on a similar level since.
the problems are highlighted quite well in that article.
But in fairness they are not doing that bad - Its a competitive league and its almost impossible to create a Bayern in england.
But that makes (for me - not all - not everyone has to prefer it) a better domestic league.
I loved the fight Leicester showed v Sevillia (that is what european competition is all about. They may have been a bit 'dirty' - but boy they fought hard.
And Man U could easily win the UEFA -
Whatever the issues are - anyway England will not be losing 4 spots in Europe - so there really isn't much issue.
Cheslea could do very well next season as well. top 6 European team IMO. and well in with a chance at the win.

I've simply never bought the winter break argument. Two weeks off makes that much difference?
There's no question it's due to the over competitive nature of the league. One team hasn't been able to dominate since Fergie's 07/08/09 seasons. Since then, we've seen the arrival of city as a power-house and the gradual emergence of Tottenham. You now have six genuine title contenders slugging it out and taking points off each other (Leicester never win the title without that competitiveness).
What the league needs is for City to become the dominant force (and I'm saying that as a united fan). Once that one top team excels and pulls away, only one (at best two) teams will be able to go with them.
Frankly, it is the emergence of City as a force that has thrown the league out of whack.
The sooner they become the dominate force they frankly ought to be, the sooner another couple of teams can start chasing them and the league can settle. As long as it's a fee for all, we will suffer in Europe. That being said, English football has never been so good to watch.

We went backwards after 96 and have remained on a similar level since. The squad was at its peak in 98. You had a really well balanced squad, a good blend of experience and youth, you had quality all over the park, the two weak links in that entire squad were probably Paul Merson and Rob Lee, and they were both really good players. It is just a shame Glenn Hoddle was in charge and that the referee screwed us against Argentina (again), and that we can't take penalties. Anyone would think that it was us that started the Falklands conflict or the two world wars the way refs treat us. The current batch of players are almost as bad as the Graham Taylor era. I see today that all our strikers are crocked, it adds weight to what I've been saying all along, we have to have a mid season-break and we have to have less matches. Every single top manager agrees, they surely all can't be wrong?

Yes we play too much and the england first 11 especially does - we have talent though. But we had top world class players back in the 90's - mid - since then we have been on a lower level.
Kane and co are brilliant players. Its a shame they get ran rigid though. They just cannot keep it up when international time comes around and the pressure is just too much to heap on them
Kane maybe an exception(injuries withstanding) - as he does seem to have a head on his shoulders where by the media may not l=make him worse come international time.
The managers are not wrong.

We got to a point where Leicester dominated because of it!! now they ae close to relegation yet still in the top 8 of europe.. if we cant add these factors together we are just stupid. to ignore this obvious trend is to ignore the world is round.... we need less games. or just accept it and celebrate that the league is still a very good watch.

Chelsea are dominating because they got a shot in the arm from a new manager, new system and the addition of better players. And what trend? United competed to a high level in Europe every single season under Fergie and they still dominated the league. It's got nothing to do with fixtures, its entirely to do with quality. These German teams that play fewer games, how many Champions Leagues are they winning again? The only German team that has a realistic chance of winning the CL is Bayern because they posses better quality and less domestic competition -- end of.

These German teams not only play fewer games, they also have a much smaller budget than comparable PL teams. cloud.highcharts.com/embed/owigezThe issue is about value for money. E: This chart is for the CL participants two seasons ago.

These German teams that play fewer games, how many Champions Leagues are they winning again? The only German team that has a realistic chance of winning the CL is Bayern because they posses better quality and less domestic competition -- end of. Fergie switched to a squad rotation system though. in the mid 90s when he saw he was getting whooped every time in the Champions League he was playing the same XI every week when possible. Then in the late 90s he brought in squad rotation, he had Cole, Yorke, Sheringham and Solksjaer for instance rotating for the strikers position. And hey presto, they won everything. The problem though with this is it dilutes your team, and you need massive resources to fund it. Funnily enough, I was reading a few months ago that his squad would know well in advance who was going to be playing in a league cup match or FA Cup game that was weeks away. Everything was meticulously planned to get everything out of the squad. But no one is really rotating at the moment, not even Jose, and we're seeing how diabolical it is proving to be in Europe. Why? Because they simply can not afford to playing less than their best XI in any given game, every point is crucial. You were right when you said the top 6 slogging it out is a problem. But you didn't quite tell the whole story. We have to start playing less games, and we have to have a break, there comes a time when you have to admit that all the expertise, all the top managers, all the sport's science, just might be, just might be right. If nothing else, it is surely worth a try?

No end of at all. germanys structure, behaviour; fans, other teams, general attitude allows Bayern to have less competition..until........ and its it's one of the reasons why I am a big fan of Leipzig as they are going against that Statous quo. I hope they continue and go after even bigger targets. If it was impossible for our top 6 teams to have split best players. And one got the pick of the lot. Then We wouldn't just have a Bayern, but also a CL competing team year in year out. the PL had united, but they did it without it being like a protected species' it's not a Barcelona or Real Madrid in that sense. It was just a bloody great team DISPITE the system and attitudes of our media and fans. And know that we have split to revs it's even harder for a great team to top the league and be a top CL team with it. The whole of the spainish league props those two up . Yes it also has other good teams close, but they change and they will never get past the big two. The big two are like Cornish pasties, Yorkshire puddings, pints of lager and a packet of nuts.. spainish fans accept and support that infrastructure. Our league does not have this attitude. Teams will sell abroad over selling to rivals (more than often). And have the chance of buying big names.
