Both are great, but Saving Private Ryan gets my vote. Sure it's sentimental, but it's just so much more rewatchable than The Thin Red Line.

The Thin Red Line
I realize it wasn't a theatrically released film, but if you had included Band of Brothers that would have been my Number 1.
Saving Private Ryan is a great film but it has some goofy moments, almost to the point of Pearl Harbor-esque ridiculousness and sentimentality.
The Thin Red Line actually is a solid film throughout.

The Thin Red Line A+ my #12 all time.
Saving Private Ryan B+ wouldn't make my top 300.

I like both, two very different approaches. But I prefer the more visceral SPR overall.

A real WWII film vs a nature documentary
Lemme think about it...

A real WWII film vs a nature documentary Lemme think about it... lols 'Look sir! She reminds me of my niece sir!' Mickey Mouse, Steamboat Willie... cornerstones of any hard assed WWII flick. War is more than grown ups playing guns.

Saving Private Ryan
I used to be a big fan of that movie until a re-watch on Jan 2nd 2016 and it dropped back to a 6/10 which is the same score I currently give The Thin Red Line. so while, at this point in time, I don't think too much either way, Saving Private Ryan would still be my choice especially given it was top notch for me at one point where as The Thin Red Line never reached that status.
p.s. it's pretty obvious Saving Private Ryan will have more appeal with the masses given it's much more visceral etc. plus, it never hurts to have someone like Tom Hanks in a movie which further boosts it for many I suspect.

Yeah, well its not a non-theatrically released film, its a miniseries and long form story telling is a very hard comparison to make with a film.
