"'Burr', by Gore Vidal. It was the first time I read an alternative to the story of my country as accepted by historians. It changed my politics and it changed me."

Energy. Intelligence. Commitment.
Humor (that's a bonus).
All these apply to the man as well as to his performances.

He seems to have picked more good movies to be in than bad ones.
I have always enjoyed his performances even if I have not totally enjoyed the film itself.
He has appeared in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jaws, American Graffiti and several other of my "forever" films which get periodic rewatches.
and … Gotta stop.. OP says THREE things but I could go on.
sneakin' in one more .. He's a BROOKLYN boy who made good !

His voice. He’s got that plummy quality I associate with Joan Greenwood and Glynis Johns.
He’s short. I don’t really appreciate tall men
His eyes. THey always seem full of mischief.

sneakin' in one more .. He's a BROOKLYN boy who made good ! "Beyond this fact, Richard Dreyfuss is a collection of paradoxes. He is a left-wing Social Democrat and a millionaire. He has a genius IQ and a bad school record. He is a staunch supporter of the equal rights amendment and has a reputation in the press as a womanizer (“It’s just that most of my friends are women,” he said). According to some, Dreyfuss never improvises before the cameras. Others swear that he comes alive once they’re rolling. “He scared me,” said Teri Garr, his costar in ‘Close Encounters.’ “There’s this one scene, and it’s still in the movie, where he’s digging up grass outside the window . . . and just puts his head through the glass. He had this look in his eye. It was unrehearsed, and I thought he had truly lost it. It’s an incredible scene.”
Nothing, however, would prepare me for my next meeting with Dreyfuss as much as a comment made by author/screenwriter Roger Simon, who has worked with Dreyfuss on “The Big Fix’ for the past year. “He’d love to hear every one of your tapes,” said Simon, “because he really wants to know what people think. When we ran some audience tests on ‘The Big Fix,’ Dreyfuss wanted to call up some of the participants and talk to them. Not the extreme ones, but the ones that had no reaction at all. He’s very much a populist. He loves those Frank Capra stories where the little guy stands up for what he believes.”

His humor, which shines through in his reel life and his real life. His honesty. He's not shy about telling the truth, whether is comes across as uncomfortable or not. He admits he hated working with Bill Murray, but also says that Bill Murray still makes him laugh. I'd have assumed they would bounce off each other wonderfully, What About Bob? is very funny. His filmography contains some real gold: Jaws, Stand By Me, The Graduate , American Graffiti, What About Bob?, Close Encounters of the Third Kind The American President, The Goodbye Girl Piranha 3D, RED , Cas & Dylan, Tin Men, Mr. Holland's Opus and Whose Life Is It Anyway?, which is almost never mentioned but is a real kickass performance.

Jaws Close encounters of a Third Kind Stand By Me It's easy to forget he's in 'Stand By Me' but he plays a crucial role.

When Dreyfuss appeared on the movie screen in Piranha 3D (2010) as Matt Hooper (or reasonable facsimile) it was a magical movie moment for a big Jaws freak like me. Never saw it coming, such a cool surprise.

Stand By Me & Jaws, he's in 2 of my top 4 films of all time.
American Graffiti, he steals the show without actually stealing the show.
While he was admittedly a go-to everyman type for the Spielbergian era, his performances were always solid.

His casting in JAWS was brilliant. The three of them were well cast but Hooper could have easily gone in a totally different direction. The Hooper role as described in the novel was more like a Kevin Costner (who has an affair with Ellen Brody!). But making him the physically weakest yet the brainy one established an affinity between him and Brody (who was himself an outsider in the community yet was capable of handling himself on land -except around the mayor--but afraid of water--Hooper on the other hand was more at home in the sea but got into trouble on land--and was able to tell off the mayor in ways Brody could not). The scene where he visits Brody after getting slapped was a great bit of character bonding--a rare scene in a Spielberg movie with no Williams soundtrack!
And the contrast between him and Quint was just as compelling for the conflict. It also helped with the suspense--like when they are being chased and Hooper and Quint are starting to get nervous while Brody is beginning to accept it as a crisis. Hooper's vulnerability also made his cage incident more scary.
I didn't see DILLINGER until recently--Dreyfuss was effective as a killer in that.

I had a crush on Richard Dreyfuss starting in 1973, after seeing American Graffiti. I don't think I have ever gotten over it. He is just so sexy, to me it is there no matter what age he is.
He is a Scorpio, like me!
I love AG, Mr Holland's Opus and all his movies really. I like his intensity. He's never had a wishy-washy moment onscreen. He's passionate in all his roles.
