You remember those sitcoms from the 1980s and 1990s that had "A Very Special Episode" where the sad piano music would play and you'd know some serious stuff was about to go down.
There is a series on YouTube by "Funny or Die" called "A Very Special Episode"
If you enjoy old TV sitcoms, I recommend watching a few, they're pretty funny.

Dinosaurs had some of the best 'very special' episodes.

I was never a big fan of those episodes. Most of them where far to sappy.

Yeah I recall a few. Sometimes at the end of the episode an actor or the entire cast would come out as themselves and talk to the audience about topics discussed in the episode. I recall Growing Pains and Family matters did such a thing.
Very Specials were generally bad episodes that handled serious issues like a clumsy man trying to juggle. They were ham-fisted, sometimes weird, and always beat you over the head with their message. Sometimes they were meant to be Emmy bait, trying to throw in with other drama shows when the show in question wasn't even a drama.
Never seen an episode, but I understand the show Blossom was notorious for Very Special Episodes.

Yes, I remember some of those those...
Fraiser had one those "Must-See Episodes" too...
The PROMO... for Season 10's "Rooms With A View" (Part 2) (2002), which was the story about Niles having to be in the Hospital for emergency surgery... Referenced a "Powerful" episode (As I recall...) and even featured "The Pretenders" song: "I'll Stand By You"...
A bit over the top?, yes, But...
The episode WAS considerably more serious than most of the episodes, and the emotions ran high in the characters over their concern for Niles... As I recall, Daphne broke open a candy machine, and then started crying due to her fear of losing Niles...

Arnold and Dudley got molested, Tom Hanks was a raging alcoholic, Mallory got sexually accosted, Edith almost got raped by a detective, Sam got kidnapped, Cheri locked herself in an old refrigerator, Arnold and Kimberly got kidnapped, Kimberly got bulimia, Arnold and Dudley smoked, Jesse got addicted to caffeine pills, am I missing anything?

Freddie "Boom Boom" Washington addicted to pain killers. But yeah, you got all the good ones.

Heather was assaulted, and Wesley's camp counselor "touched" him (same show). Carol's boyfriend died after driving drunk. Carlton learned money doesn't save him, and Will's dad walked out on him (again). My favorite show ever, Seinfeld, came along at the right fucking time.

One of the few fairly good ones was the Family Ties special ep where Alex's best friend commits suicide and Alex deals with the trauma in a lengthy session with a psychotherapist. Yeah, it was pretty much a vanity vehicle for Michael J. Fox who was obviously being groomed for bigger things, but he did do a decent job, and the episode itself was somewhat more intelligently handled than the majority of these were.

So "A Very Special Episode" IS usually "A Very UNSPECIAL Episode" and the WORST of the season OR the series?!

The Facts of Life girls smoked a joint. The fat girl bought a bong and filled it with jelly beans.

Well, Elaine got accosted by Crazy Joe Davola in an eerie moment for Seinfeld. It's my favorite show too!

On a very special episode of What's Happening!, Rerun is encouraged by a music bootlegger to smuggle a tape recorder into a Doobie Brothers concert and record the performance. When he's found out, the Doobie Brothers lecture Rerun and his pals on the evils of illegally recording music, and then help capture the bootleggers themselves! Okay, so maybe bootleg music isn't as special as substance abuse, death, and molestation, but those Doobie guys seemed awfully solemn about it.

And "WKRP in Cincinnati" did a very special episode about the kids who got trampled to death at a Who concert. There's a long segment when the cast talk about the evils of general admission concerts that sounds like a Public Service Announcement.

the entire first season of full house was painful.... danny gets close to the girl flipping out... 'is this about your mother dying?' camera zooms in so close you can see the little red spots on his face. he starts breathing through his nose heavily and he is about to cry.
these 'very special blossom' episodes happened because apparently many children were not considered family members worthy of family discussions back then. that is why we also had to have 'the more you know' little tidbits and ITS TEN PM DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR CHILDREN ARE? crap. parents starting in the 80s had lost track of their kids and had let parenting itself fall to the wayside.
these vsb's kind of MADE the parents sit with their child to watch the show and hopefully discuss the contents and topic at hand. kids even then STILL didn't know not to accept rides from strangers or that making fun of someone with an otherwise controlled illness is wrong [diff'rent strokes]. heck, you still had kids 'hiding in refrigerators' [punky Brewster]!
instead of waiting for parents to tell them or having instructional time being used for 'stay safe lessons' in school[because they should be done by the parents] the entertainment industry took it upon themselves to start education the nation's youth. cause parents most likely weren't doing it.
hey, so many of us learned how to Heimlich due to Benson.
