My Netflix DVD pick: BLACKWAY - After Lillian returns to the Pacific Northwest logging town where she grew up, a local crime boss takes an unwanted and unhealthy interest in her. When the sheriff gives Lillian the brushoff, she turns to a hard-bitten former logger for help. Cast Anthony Hopkins, Julia Stiles, Alexander Ludwig, Ray Liotta, Hal Holbrook, Lochlyn Munro, Steve Bacic, Aaron Pearl, Aleks Paunovic Director Daniel Alfredson www.imdb.com/title/tt4061010/

SPOILERS -
Favorite scene with Lillian (Julia Stiles) - Furious that none of the pathetic loggers will help her find Blackway.

I watched Blackway the other night. It's a good, well-acted thriller. Hopkins is as good as always.

I loved the characters, the settings, and the tension - thinking that there would be lots of twists and turns, and thinking that Blackway may not be the only evil dude! It was great seeing Julia Stiles in a meaty role like this!

I watched this film recently and enjoyed it. It has a strong cast, good performances, and a straightforward plot with a non-Hollywood, minimalist feel to boot. What's not to like? Blackway reminds me of the slow burn thrillers that came out during the 70s, a decade when character development and a sense of realism, as well as a touch of ambiguity, carried a film (compare that to modern thrillers that tend to rely more on hackneyed plot twists, nonstop violence and throwaway/forgettable characters...) Also, the misty, overcast Pacific Northwest setting only added to the film's charm. A good one.

So many Thrillers end right after the final showdown. I love how this one kept going - not only showing Lillian drive everyone home, but the possible twist of wondering if Anthony's character had the beginnings of Dimentia or was traumatized by what had just happened or maybe something more...

I love how this one kept going - not only showing Lillian drive everyone home, but the possible twist of wondering if Anthony's character had the beginnings of Dimentia or was traumatized by what had just happened or maybe something more... I wondered if there was something deeper between Blackway and Lester (Hopkins character) than was shown in the film. There was the flashback of Lester returning home from his daughter's funeral and being pulled over by Officer Blackway and Blackway treating him like shit, saying stuff about him being a bad father, etc. But was there more to it than that? Did Blackway possibly have a relationship with Lester's daughter (involving sex or drugs) that drove her to suicide? Is that why Lester had such a personal dislike of Blackway? So many questions.

I was thinking the same thing - that Blackway was somehow responsible for Lester's daughter's death.
