How then, do they maintain, what could be viewed as a disproportionate amount of power/clout?

How then, do they maintain, what could be viewed as a disproportionate amount of power/clout? They don't. Social Darwinists do. Hmmmm?

How then, do they maintain, what could be viewed as a disproportionate amount of power/clout? By maintaining their alliance with those who support the interests of big business and the wealthy. (This is the coalition that makes up the Republican Party.)

How then, do they maintain, what could be viewed as a disproportionate amount of power/clout? Under the American election system, some people's votes count for more than others.

They don't. Social Darwinists do. Hmmmm?...a bit like Creationism has been discredited! I would not deny that very large numbers of people advocate "discredited" things. "Creationism" is not any issue. The Bible is allegorical. Evolution has no explanation for the origin of life. Creationism has nothing to do with all that.

The American political system is not based on the principle of one person-one vote. Rather, it favors rural and less-populated areas, where white Evanglical Protestants make up a larger share of the population. Power/clout also follow the money, which is mostly in the hands of older whites, who are more likely to be Evangelical Protestants.
The political system was deliberately designed to give relatively more power to rural populations. When the Constitution was written, most of the authors and most of the citizens who voted to adopt it were rural landowners.

Historically, only one of the presidents of the United States has been a Catholic. All of the others have been Protestants (excluding those who might arguably have been classified as Deist). Although, interestingly, Catholics and Jews have prominent representation on the US Supreme Court. One of the noteworthy things about that is that the justices of the Court are not selected by the population at large. I suspect that if they were, the composition of the Court, in terms of religious background, would be rather different.

How then, do they maintain, what could be viewed as a disproportionate amount of power/clout? Decline in white Christian population may not necessarily mean decline in Christianity. Blacks and Hispanics would probably be more likely to be Christian in America than whites.
