The Jewel of the NileIt's not just the best romantic comedy of 1985, it's the best romantic comedy ever. (Opinions might vary) It's a great movie for this weekend. Edit > It turns out I haven't seen all the romantic comedies there are and one of those I missed might turn out to be the best of all time. I still think Jewel of the Nile is best for this summer. Edit #2 > In the interests of fairness I think I should report that romantic comedies are not near the top of the list of my favorite things. My foremost interests are 1 Science 2 Religion and 3 Politics. There are about ten or twelve other things before romantic comedies. In fact I am not likely to see a romantic comedy unless they show it on TV. I think you should keep that in mind when considering my opinions on romantic comedies. Of the numerous romantic comedies mentioned in this thread I have not even seen most of them.

How so? I am not making any disagreements with you so far and I haven't seen the film for yonks, but I would like to hear a more comprehensive critique of what elements make it the best rom com ever to your mind. Name a romantic comedy you liked better. How about The Out of Towners (1970) with Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis? Or the the 1999 remake with Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn? (I am not a big fan of remakes. I think the original was funnier.) I'll see what scholarly critique I can piece together. It can be difficult to describe what "funny" is though.

Jewel of the Nile sucked. It was a major disappointment coming after it's predecessor, the likable if somewhat over-rated Romancing the Stone.
The characters were less likable, the comedy often fell flat, it dragged things out, there was that stupid damn scene with the fight with the tribe, and after awhile I just didn't care. The action peaks with the F-16.
These films had potential to be a more contemporary rival to Indiana Jones but it fell flat at the second movie.
Stick with Indiana Jones for this sort of thing.
As far as romantic comedies go, I would put both Romancing and Jewel several fathoms beneath Crocodile Dundee.
As for 1985 romantic comedies, well it was the highest grossing one of 1985, I'll give it that.

Tell that to fans of James Cameron's Titanic. They will have a cow with anyone who dares say that any movie is by far, more romantic than that one. (at the Titanic fans; not you Arlon).

I'm terribly sorry clusium and progressiveelement , I never meant to imply Jewel of the Nile was the best movie ever. Some of the movies you like better are either not comedies or not romances. It needs to be both to be counted as a romantic comedy. I happen to be a big fan of Indiana Jones. I would call those "Action Adventure" movies though. One exception is Raiders of the Lost Ark, which I might count as an Action-Adventure-Romantic-Comedy (Edit > Okay not so much comedy.). I like the song My Heart Will Go On from the movie The Titanic. On America's Got Talent a little kid sang that song and got tremendous applause. I haven't yet seen Crocodile Dundee yet and I'm thinking maybe I should.

Oh, I'm not saying that I thought that Titanic was the best movie ever. While I did like the movie, I certainly didn't think it was necessarily the most romantic movie ever made. When I dared to say so, fans of the movie got their panties all tied up in a knot. For the record, I also like Indiana Jones movies too. For that matter, I also liked Romancing the Stone, & Jewel of the Nile. My favourite Indy movie is Temple of Doom, & I hope Jonathan Ke Quan either returns in the next Indy movie, or some other one (of all the Indy movies, the main actors of TOD were the only ones not to return in a later one).

I might have to be that mean sometime though.

Personally, my favourite romantic movie is LadyHawke & the 1984 TV miniseries The Last Days of Pompeii.

You are all talking bollocks. THE best rom/com ever has to be Love Actually with some of the Julia Roberts movies like Notting Hill and Pretty Woman as wel as When Harry Met Sally and Weddings and a Funeral as highly commended.

I'm terribly sorry. My evil twin brother Arxon started this thread. I know nothing about romantic comedies and wouldn't venture to guess which is the best of all time.
