In other words, it used to be, if my memory is correct, that if a film had a star that you liked then you'd go see it. But now, that doesn't really happen anymore.
It's weird isn't it?

It's weird isn't it? That's because Hollyweird sucks at casting now. Too many bland Jeremy Renners, Ann Hathaways and other weirdos being foisted upon audiences.

When movie stars who've had either box office success or Oscar/Golden Globes nominations are jumping to do television projects (including Netflix), that might be the case. Also, those who are in superhero movies can do good work in other movies (Chris Evans in "Gifted" and "Snowpiercer", for example) but the box office numbers will fail to match the opening weekend of any one of the superhero movies.

That's what you get for casting people that simply look like fashion models instead of having some kind of interesting look or personality / acting style. We don't have stars like Vincent Price, Lee Van Cleef or Jack Palance anymore.

There may be several reasons for that. One reason could be that the industry is now saturated with comic book movies where characters are bigger than actors. Now it's about going to see what Spider-Man or Batman is in etc.. I also think the allure of the big film star has lessened over the years, possibly because there are a lot more stars around and you can see and hear more from them than you ever could before, owing to the rise of social media and the increase in volume of channels and TV shows. So in a sense, whereas before they were big fish in smaller ponds, they are now smaller fish in bigger ponds.

Casting today is more about being political correct than casting the best people for the role.

Casting today is more about being political correct than casting the best people for the role. Exactly. It has become mostly about casting the loudest, most obnoxious, political activist.

Leonardo DiCaprio is the last of the Mohicans.
He's the only movie star like old Hollywood that has such a following with men and women.
He's Box Office and critical gold.

So-so. Though there is that one occasion that a famous actor gets starred in a popular franchise film to grab some attention.

You don't need to go to the cinema as much to see them when they can come to you via Twitter or whatever else. That special sort of connection between audience and movie star that there used to be isn't the same now that the cinema isn't the only means of seeing them.
